Years Later...

"No," a sixteen year old Scott groans.

"But why?" eight year old Scarlett cries.

"Because I said so," Scott crosses his arms.

I watch my teenage nephew look down at his baby cousin, shaking his head when she asks him the same question again.

"But why, Scott?" Her eyes, wide and hopeful. "Why can't I come?"

"Because you're a baby," he tells her and looks at me for help.

Scarlett considers this for a moment, her small brows furrowed in contemplation. "But I want to come with! Please, Scott?" she pleads.

"Kay, tell her," Scott says to me.

Scarlett looks at me briefly, then back at Scott, her lower lip trembling slightly. Scott kneels down to Scarlett's eye level, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"Look, I'll bring you some cotton candy, okay?" Scott tries.

Scarlett's eyes widen even further, her face lighting up like a Christmas tree. "Cotton candy? Really, Scott?" she asks.

I laugh at their interaction, a surge of love for them rushing through me.

"What are they arguing about now?" Zach joins me, kissing my cheek as he sits down beside me.

"Scarlett wants to go to the carnival with Scott," I tell my husband.

Zach watches them for a moment, a soft smile playing on his lips. "Looks like Scott's trying to negotiate terms," he remarks, his tone lighthearted.

"Seems like it," I reply, enjoying the sight of Scott and Scarlett huddled together, deep in conversation.

"Daddy," Scarlett skips towards Zach. "I can't go to the carnival with Scott but he's going to bring me cotton candy."

I laugh and put my arm around Scott's shoulders when he comes and sit beside me, shaking his head at Scarlett. I kiss his forehead, laughing when he groans and wipes at his forehead.

My Scotty-boy.

"What is it, Kay?" Scott asks when he notices my eyes on him.

"Nothing," I smile, pulling him close to me. "Be careful tonight, okay? And keep your phone close to you."

Scott rolls his eyes playfully and nods before returning my embrace and walking inside the house. Scarlett runs after, listing off what flavours cotton candy she likes.

Zach and I laugh and I look at my handsome husband.

"I love our life," I tell him.

Zach smiles warmly at me. "I love our life too," he replies, wrapping his arms around me. Zach kisses my forehead tenderly. "We're lucky," he says softly, his voice filled with gratitude.

"We really are," I murmur, feeling a profound sense of happiness settle over me.

He pulls me to my feet and we walk inside together. When we reach the family room, Zach turns me to him and his lips find mine. With a gentle tug, Zach leads us to the couch, never breaking our kiss. He lowers me down until I'm lying beneath him, his weight supporting but not overwhelming. His hands roam over my body, igniting a fire within me.

When we part, he smiles down at me.

"I love you," he says, hie eyes shining with love.

"I love you," I tell him.

"We love you too!" I hear before Scott and Scarlett jumps on Zach's back, crushing us both.

Yes, I truly love this life.

The end.
