And when you're needing your space
To do some navigating
I'll be here patiently waiting
'Cause even the stars they burn
'Cause even the stars they burn
We've got a lot to learn
God knows we're worth it
Jason Mraz ~ I Won't Give Up
He closes the gap between us and his lips meet mine. His touch is gentle at first, almost hesitant, as if he's savouring the moment. I can feel the warmth of his breath against my skin, and my heart races in response.
His hand cups the back of my neck, fingers threading through my hair, pulling me closer. The kiss deepens, becoming more urgent, as if we're both afraid to let go. My hands find their way to his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath my fingertips. In this moment, nothing else matters. The world fades away, leaving just the two of us, lost in each other.
His lips move against mine with a tenderness that sends shivers down my spine. My fingers curl into the fabric of his shirt, desperate to keep him close, to never let this moment end. He responds with a soft sigh, his other hand sliding around my waist, pulling me even closer until there's no space left between us.
We break apart just enough to catch our breath, foreheads resting against each other. His eyes search mine, filled with a mixture of desire and something deeper, something that makes my heart swell.
He whispers my name, his voice a soft caress, and it feels like a promise, a vow of what's to come. I close my eyes, savouring the feel of him, the taste of him, memorising every detail of this perfect moment.
I watch as he leans back down and I close my eyes, wanting another kiss.
"Damn," I hear a familiar voice and open my eyes. I remain in Zach's embrace as I look to my right to see Shane and Jane. "Now that's what I'm talking about!" Shane says and comes closer and raises a hand, waiting for a high-five.
Zach only glares at his friend.
I giggle at Shane's face when he lowers his hand before looking at me and raising it again. I touch my hand to his and laugh when he fists the air, shouting "yeah!"
"Get the fuck out," Zach tells his friend.
"But we are out," Shane says, glancing around the balcony. Zach growls and Shane backs away, grabbing Jane's arm, "Alright, alright, but remember children, tuck it before you fu–"
Jane slaps him over the head, "What are you on about? It's a balcony, not a bedroom. Have some respect!"
Shane winces, rubbing the back of his head, but then he grins. "Hey, I'm just saying, it's a good thing you two didn't start a fire with all that heat!" He winks at us, causing me to blush and Zach to scowl even harder.
Zach, clearly ready to unleash more of his irritation, takes a deep breath, clearly trying to maintain his composure. "You know what? Just leave. Now."
Shane raises his hands in mock surrender, chuckling as he steps back. "Alright, alright, we're going. But remember, lovebirds, keep it PG, or at least somewhere private!"
"I don't know how we're friends," Zach shakes his head before looking down at me and tightening his hold around my waist.
He leans down and places a soft kiss on my lips.
Then another.
And another.
I giggle through the kisses but respond with ease.
Then he leans back and watches me, his eyes serious and filled with determination. "We are doing this," he states firmly.
I gape at him, my heart skipping a beat at the intensity of his words.
"I'm done keeping my distance. This is happening," he says, motioning between our bodies. "No more holding back."
I bite my lip and as I go to say something, he cover my lips with his and once again, I'm lost. When he finally pulls back, his forehead rests against mine, and we both breathe heavily, trying to steady our racing hearts. His eyes meet mine, filled with a mix of love and determination that takes my breath away all over again.
"I'm not letting you go," he whispers, his voice raw with emotion. "No more pretending, no more holding back. I want this. I want us."
"We're doing this," I whisper against his lips, a smile spreading across my face.
* * *
I stretch in bed, feeling content and happy for the first time in a long time. After our kiss last night, Zach had led me back to my bedroom, kissed me tenderly, and whispered goodnight.
I had been giddy, a smile permanently etched on my face, but I fell asleep with ease, my heart light and my dreams sweet.
A soft knock on my door pulls me from my daydreaming and I sit up, brushing the sleep from my eyes as the door creaks open. Zach stands in the doorway, a shy smile playing on his lips. He's holding a tray with breakfast—fresh orange juice, toast, and scrambled eggs.
"Good morning," he says, his voice soft and warm. "I thought you might like some breakfast."
I can't help the grin that spreads across my face. "You made me breakfast?"
He walks over, setting the tray down on the bed beside me. "I wanted to do something nice for you. After last night, it just felt right."
I reach for his hand, pulling him to sit beside me. "Thank you, Zach. You didn't have to, but it's perfect."
We share the breakfast, talking and laughing, the intimacy of last night making everything feel more connected, more real. As we finish, he takes my hand in his, his expression turning serious.
"I meant what I said last night," he begins, his eyes locked with mine. "I'm all in, for whatever comes next. I want to be with you, really be with you."
My heart swells at his words. "I want that too, Zach. More than anything."
He leans in, pressing a gentle kiss to my lips. "Good. Because this is just the beginning."
Oh my.
