But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human'

I look around Zach's spacious apartment. It screams masculinity with its dark decor—black carpets, dark couches, black furniture, and a black-and-white kitchen. I have yet to see the bedrooms, but I make a mental note to add some colour to this place.
Last week, we decided that if we were going to live together, it would be at his place. I couldn't bring myself to live in Jenna and Patrick's house, and I hadn't been there since that night.
"Your parents should be over soon with Scott's stuff. His room is opposite yours, and mine is beside yours," Zach tells me as we walk down the hall to the kitchen.
"Okay," I nod and sit down at the breakfast bar, resting my elbows on the counter and closing my eyes.
"You okay?" Zach asks, sounding concerned, but I don't open my eyes to confirm.
"Hmm," I hum.
Behind my closed eyes, I see Jenna's face.
We'll be home by eleven at the latest, promise.
Love you, Kay.
I open my eyes and look at Zach, who is staring at me.
"Kaylee," he says, tilting his head with a confused expression.
"It's nothing," I tell him, trying to swallow the lump in my throat.
His lips part as he stares at me. Before I can stop it, a sob rakes through my body. I cover my mouth with my hands as another sob escapes.
Soon, I am crying hysterically.
I had been holding it all inside since that night at the hospital. As the tears keep falling, I feel a pair of arms wrap around me, pulling me into Zach's chest. As if my mind thinks it's okay to let it all out now, I sob harder into Zach's shirt as his chin rests on my head. Through my crying, I hear him let out a shaky breath, and I know that while I am letting it all out, he is staying strong for both of us.

I unpack my last suitcase before leaving my new bedroom. I walk into Scott's room and see all his Spider-Man furniture, clothes, and toys in place. I walk down the hall into the spacious family room, where Scott and Zach are watching the animated Spider-Man. As I make my way to the kitchen, the doorbell rings.
"I'll get it," I say before Zach can get up. I walk over to the door and unlock it.
"You bitch! I've been calling and calling for the past hour and—," a man with his back to me and his arms in the air shouts. "—she threw me out because I told her I just wanted to have sex—," and finally, he turns around.
His dark brown eyes widen when he sees me standing by the door. He runs his fingers through his hair and tilts his head to the side.
"Kaylee?" he asks.
"Shane," I smile and open the door wider for him to come in. He walks toward the family room but not before giving me a confused look. I follow him into the living room and sit down in the armchair as Shane takes a seat beside Zach.
"What are you doing here?" Zach asks Shane, then returns his eyes to the television.
"Oh, I feel so loved," Shane says sarcastically before glaring at Zach. "I've been calling for the past hour, you fu–fu– fudge cake. Melanie kicked me out when I told her that I just wanted to... bake with her. And let me tell you, she lives in the middle of the woods. And a man like myself is not safe there," Shane says, slowing down and changing the inappropriate words.
Zach just shakes his head and keeps his eyes on the TV. Scott yawns and snuggles into Zach's chest. "Come on, Scotty-boy, time for bed," I say and reach for him. I place him on my hip and leave the men to talk.
"So what's going on between you and Kaylee?" Shane asks once she's out of earshot.
"Nothing is going on between us," I tell my annoying friend.
"Mmhh," he mumbles, looking at me. "So why is she here?"
"Scott and Kaylee live here now," I tell him, relieved when he stops asking questions. I get up and walk to the kitchen. Opening the fridge, I grab the sandwich Kaylee made earlier. I look over my shoulder when I hear footsteps and see Shane entering the kitchen and sitting on the counter stool.
"I'm hungry. Give me some," he says, reaching for the sandwich in my hand. I hold it out of his reach and glare at him.
"Make some yourself," I grunt and take a bite of the food.
The asshole pouts at Kaylee when she walks in. She heads to the fridge but not before her hazel eyes meet mine. The first time I met her, she wore a polka-dot dress, and I could never forget how scared she looked when she dropped a glass of juice in my lap. Her thick brown hair was shorter back then, but I like it at the length it is now.
I look away from her when Shane's voice interrupts my thoughts. "Would you make me a sandwich, Kaylee darlin'?" Shane asks with an innocent tone.
She stares at him for a moment before shrugging. "Sure," her voice comes out soft like silk.
"Thanks," Shane beams and drums his fingers on the counter as he watches Kaylee prepare his sandwich. When she's done, she hands him the plate before grabbing a bottle of water and sitting beside Shane as he takes a big bite.
"So, when are you going back to college?" I ask Kaylee. Both of us hadn't been to class for almost a week now, and it was really time to focus on something else.
"Tomorrow, I think," she sighs and takes a big gulp of her water.
Her answer pleases me, and I nod, "Good."
She nods too before drinking her water. I look at Shane, who is eating his sandwich like a two-year-old. I cringe in disgust when a piece of lettuce hangs out of his mouth.
"You make the best sandwiches, woman. We should get married," Shane tries to give Kaylee a flirty smile. I lean over the counter and slap the back of his head as Kaylee chuckles at his idiocy.
