Before we knew it we were on our plane heading back to Florida. As we started to make our descent into Orlando international airport I could feel a lump forming in my throat and realised it had been at least 2 hours since I spoke to Damian and considering it was only a 5 hour flight he must have sensed my nerves and apprehension.
Damian reached over and took my hand before talking. "It's ok Mija. I can tell that you are nervous but I promise you that nothing or no one is going to hurt you as long as I am around." I smiled weakly back at him and tried to compose myself. Thankfully Damian realised I wasn't going to be giving him any words so he continued. "When we land we can go straight to baggage claim and there may be a few scalpers wanting things signed but don't worry, you don't have to leave my side if you don't want too. We will get our bags and head straight to mine so that you have no fear of bumping into anyone. How does that sound to you Mija?"
I could feel myself starting to tear up a little just by how thoughtful Damian was being with this whole situation. He really was making me start to believe in people again. "Thank you, I appreciate the thought that you have put into this but are you really sure that you want me to come and stay with you? I can find a hotel, it really isn't an issue. I understand that it is a big thing to let me into your sacred space." I could feel myself now panicking and flustering my words a little.
Damian raised a hand to my cheek and rubbed me gently with his thumb before speaking. "Mija, there is nothing that I would like more. I want to share things with you and more importantly I want you to feel safe and know that I am here for you."
We disembarked the plane, grabbed our luggage and made our way to the exit. As we got to the exit Damian told me to sit down for 2 seconds while he made a phone call. The person answered quickly and it didn't take long before Damian was thanking them for their help. Damian hung up and turned back to me. "Follow me." I did as I was told as Damian started making his way towards a parking lot.
"Babe? Where are we going? The taxi rank is that way." Damian chuckled before answering me.
"Did you really think that with your anxiety as high as it is I was going to make you get a cab? A friend of mine has dropped my car off in the lot so that we can drive, I thought that doing things this way would make everything calmer for you." I blinked back the tears and smiled knowing that I really didn't want to do anything to jeopardise what the two of us were building together. Damian placed one hand on the luggage trolley and held his other hand out for me to hold as we walked together to his car.
It didn't take too long for the pair of us to reach Damian's home. It was a modest one storey in a quiet road, set back a little with a small driveway and thankfully not too big or showy. It was nice and simple and for some reason felt like somewhere I knew that I would be safe. I didn't know though if that was due to the location or due to the home owner.
Damian took the bags out of the car and led the way to the door, I followed very closely behind him. We entered the house and Damian placed the keys on a hook and the bags by the door before speaking. "Here we go Mija, while you are here for as long as you need to be I want you to treat this like home. Mi casa is su casa, ok?" I nodded back while taking a deep breath. "Good. There is one thing I need to show you before we take the grand tour. Follow me Mija."
I did as I was told and followed Damian to a room at the far end of the house. I stepped inside and gasped. "What? When? How?" All of these thoughts flooded my head as I started to take in what was around me.
"I contacted a few friends and told them what was needed. Is this ok for you? Do you think that you are going to be able to work from here?"
I walked around the room taking it all in. Against one wall was a pair of mannequins, one male and one female, the opposite wall had an overlocker, then at the window was a drawing table and art supplies and the piece de resistance stood proud in the middle of the room; a top of the range sewing machine. "It is more than I could ask for. I didn't even have this at home. How much do I owe you for all of this though?"
Damian looked slightly disappointed. "Nothing. I just wanted to do something nice for you and to show you that you are welcome here for as long as you need and even if you decide not to stay, you will always have this room to use for work. There is a shelving unit on order as well that should be here in the next few days and I didn't order materials as I thought that that was something that you would want to do yourself."
I choked back the tears and ran at Damian flinging my arms around his neck and kissing him deeply before we continued the grand tour, naturally stopping for an extra long time in the bedroom and then spending the rest of the evening on the sofa with movies and Thai food.
