The two stood in a comfortable silence before Eve breaks it. "You wanna sit on the couch?" She asks Charlie.
The man shrugs, "I'm good, just wanna get used to the wheelchair." Eve knew that Charlie just didn't want the girl to help him get into the piece of furniture but she let it slide. She went back over to her couch and sat down, instead of reading she decided to go on her phone and check if she had gotten any notifications. She opened up her phone to see three text messages.
One was from Abigail, it contained a lengthy and boring paragraph about how much better her life could've been if she had chosen to go to the "camp" instead of being disowned, Eve didn't even bother reading it. I much rather have the ability to live how I want and love who I want than be associated with you. She rolled her eyes and swiftly blocked her "mother", forever leaving the woman on read.
The second text was from Heather, it was a pretty short text. "I'll be out of the house for an hour or two, use the spare key at Charlie's." was all it read. Eve retained the information and took note that it was sent 20 minutes ago, just in case she decided to go back to her apartment at any time. Part of her wondered where Heather was going but it didn't seem urgent enough to put too much thought into it. She sent back a simple thumbs up emoji and moved onto the last text.
The last text was from Ben. Eve's eyes scanned at the notification, reading it over and over just to make sure it was real. Upon coming to the conclusion that her "father" had indeed texted her. The girl's hand shook harshly as she tried to type in the password to her phone, on the third try she finally got it right. The text message she was met with was a video. Eve took a deep breath and clicked on it.
The video showed Ben in his car, the same yellow envelope from lunch was on his lap and he seemed to be signing the final parts that would allow him to fully disown Eve. After he finished signing all the papers for Eve he carelessly stuffed the papers back into the envelope and turned to grab something from his back seat.
Eve remembered all the times she would sit in that very car and Ben would relentlessly yell at her and her sister.
He managed to grab the item from the back and turned back towards the camera. Wordlessly, he showed another yellow envelope to the camera, he pulled out the papers and showed what it said to the phone. "Heather Jean Keaton"
Eve's eyes widened. Heather was getting disowned too?
The man smiled wickedly, taking his sweet time to sign the papers.
Eve couldn't bear it, she skipped after he finished signing the papers. She felt terribly guilty for getting Heather disowned too, she didn't want that for her older sister.
He finished signing the papers about ten minutes into the thirty minute long video. He collected both of the envelopes and opened the car door. Ben grabbed the phone and showed Eve where he was, the local court house.
Eve didn't give less of a damn that she was getting disowned, she just felt terrible that she had gotten Heather disowned too.
Ben walked into the courthouse and gave the receptionist his name. The lady behind the desk told him to sit down and wait for his name to be called. And for the next fifteen minutes he did just that. He was getting visibly more and more impatient as the duration of the video and his wait lengthen.
At this point in her life, Eve could read the man like an open book. So to her it was obvious, Benjamin Oscar Keaton couldn't wait to disown his children. He was excited, the slight smile on his face and the way his eyebrows were no longer furrowed gave it away. Since the moment the lunch ended, all of the love he had for his kids turned into hatred, and that hatred doubled and tripled until all he could think about was how much his despised his own children.
