More and more shadows were starting to flood the streets. It seemed as though there were an endless number of them as they slunk through the darkness. Ghost had shot down five of them now, the bodies were littered around the streets.
"It's pishin' it doon out here." My brother said through the comms
"Speak English." Ghost asked, not fully understanding the Scots that my brother spoke.
"It's rainin' fucking hard." Johnny stated slowly with faux irritation. I huffed out a laugh at the way he said it.
"Then say so." Ghost said
"I did!" Johnny exclaimed
"Rains good. It'll cover your tracks." Ghost said
"I disagree." I mumbled, uncomfortably pulling at my rain soaked clothes.
"Covers theirs too." Johnny said
"Let's worry about you, Johnny." Ghost said
"So you do like me?" Johnny asked
"I like you alive..." Ghost said
"I second that." I said
An almost inaudible thud came from behind us and I tensed up. Memories of last night came to the surface of my thoughts, I had heard a noise then and brushed it off, now look at where I am. Ghost seemingly tensed up as well but I knew that he couldn't leave the sniper position, we could end up getting overrun by shadows if Ghost looked away.
I shuffled up onto my knees, Ghosts arm loosened around my shoulder at the motion. He glanced up at me with a confused look in his eyes as I reached my hand over to his tactical vest. I pulled out one of the knives and held it tightly in my hand.
"What are you doing?" Ghost asked in confusion. If I didn't know any better I would think he was concerned.
"There's someone in here, I'll be back." I whispered in response. I reluctantly stood up and removed myself from Ghost's warm hold.
He watched in concern as I turned on my heels and slowly crept towards the location of the noise.A shiver ran down my spin as the cold air properly hit me again. Without the warmth of the larger man beside me my body felt colder than ever.
I crept through the shadows as I searched for whatever it was that had made a noise. It didn't take me long to spot the figure of a man in the darkened corner of the church. I took in a deep breath as adrenaline coursed through my body. I know that I have no other choice but to take the man down, it was the only way that we would be safe.
I kept myself hidden as I got closer and closer to the shadow. He had body armor on which could prove challenging, but as long as I found a weak spot in the thick armor, there shouldn't be too much of an issue.
I held my breath as I stood directly behind the shadow, the knife in my hand poised, ready to strike him down.
For fear of getting caught, I quickly lunged forward to get it done and over with. The knife jammed Into the man's neck with ease and I flinched at the sound he made. He grunted and blood began to flow from the deep wound. I let go of the handle as the man fell to the marble floor.
I stared down at his now lifeless body with an intense feeling of guilt in my chest. Even though he was here to kill us, I couldn't help but feel remorseful for the life I was forced to take. I didn't have a choice, but that didn't make it any easier.
I sighed softly as I turned back around and headed for Ghost. I found him lying in the same position as I had left him in, his front was pushed up against the cold ground of the balcony and his eye was up against the scope of his rifle.
