Even with the Darkling gone, a sense of sadness still draped over the camp as we walked in. Tolya and Tamar held Nikolai upright as he slowly wobbled his way over to the barrels.

"Long may the night carry our souls" Tolya began. "Until the dawn renews us."

"Rabinov." A voice croaked from behind us. "Canto Seventeen." It was Kaz, who looked just as rough as any of us. I was glad they had joined us at Kirigan's basecamp.

"Seems we both share an appreciation for life's beauty." Tolya sent him a weak smile.

Nikolai groaned as he sat down, instantly turning out attention on him. "Are you ok?" I quickly asked looking him over.

"A moment of sun before we deal with our losses." He managed to say through heavy breaths. "Dominik."

"He did exactly what any of us would have done for each other." I said grabbing his arm. "For you."

Dominik would have hated to see us sulking around over him being gone, so I knew I had to remain strong for him.

Just then, I saw Inej approaching us. But not a sign of Aleksander's body.

"Kirigan?" I asked slightly terrified.

"Dead. Zoya is protecting the body." I felt myself relax and I slowly leaned against Nikolai. "Alina wants it burned."

"Can't blame her." I huffed. Nikolai placed his hand on my leg before he carefully stood up.

"Thank you," he said. "My country might have
been sunk if you hadn't arrived."

"Again." I butted in, earning a chuckle from all of them.

"We'll settle those thanks in gold." Kaz mumbled and sent Nikolai a wink.

I looked around and my eyes landed on the tall brunette with a top hat. I was quite upset that he did not remember me. But suddenly, as if a lightbulb lit inside his head, he jumped and gasped.

He clicked his finger and pointed at me. "Adelaide Vertov!" He exclaimed with shock.

"Jesper Fahey." I nodded and chuckled at the excited boy.

"You two know each other?" Tamar asked confused, and I could tell that the rest felt the same.

"I trained with this rascal for a few years." I giggled.

"You could say I'm friends with a Saint." He said proudly while rubbing "dust" of his shoulders.
