get your tissues ready
it was all too fast, what just happened. newt's words hung in the still air, as thick smoke raised and slowly engulfed the buildings around them. the last 10 minutes kept replaying in thomas's head on repeat over and over again, like a broken recorder.
every breath and eye contact they shared,
every flashback from their time together,
every word newt said,
and every word thomas didn't.
thomas stared at the lifeless body of newt, every form of grief and misery rushing to his center and knocking the air out of his body. he leaned forward on his knees and was on all fours, still in denial that newt was gone.
he couldnt hear the screams of terror around him.
he couldnt hear the collapsing buildings around him.
he couldnt hear the bombs going off in every direction.
all he could hear, were the last words of newt,
the words he said to him, full of love and affection, full of promise and life, but full of sorrow and death.
"tommy, i guess this is the end. i couldn't remember what the outside world looked like before the maze, but thanks to you i got to see it. don't blame yourself, please. it is not your fault that i'm not immune. every moment we spent together, i will cherish it in my memory forever. this may not be the future we imagined for us, but i would do this with you over and over if i had to. i thank the heavens every day that they let me have you in this lifetime. we may not have worked out this time, but i promise, i will find you in another universe and fall in love with you the same way i did in this world. i love you endlessly tommy, and i will never regret ever loving you."
and just like that, newt took his last breath and let it go, succumbing to the darkness at the same time. thomas's sobs turned into tears, holding newt's necklace to his heart. newt's words hung in the still air, replaying over and over like an echo.
thomas had so much he wanted to say to newt, but that hope was short-lived when this tragedy suddenly happened. quietly, so softly, he whispered while looking up at the sky, which was a mix of stars and smoke.
"newt, you are my moon, sun, stars and my entire universe. i never thought you would actually become a star in this way. i had so much planned for us and i really believed that you would make it. in any other universe, i will search for you until the day i die, and i will keep looking for you in every lifetime. i love you endlessly newt, i will never stop loving you. forever and always."
