In the dark and quiet living room of the Miller residence, sisters - twelve year old, Sarah and eight year old, Annie - were fast asleep on the couch, with the ticking of a clock quietly echoing in the background.
The front door opened and their father, Joel, walked in with his cell phone practically pinned to his ear. "Tommy. Tommy, listen to me. He is the contractor..." He lowered his voice, not wanting to wake the girls up. "He is the contractor, okay? I can't lose this job. I-- I understand. Let's talk about this in the morning, okay? We'll talk about it the morning. Alright, goodnight."
Sighing quietly, Joel turned a lamp on and the soft orange glow revealed the girls laying asleep on the couch. He dumped his phone and keys down onto the cabinet where the lamp sat, causing Sarah to wake up. She yawned and gave her little a sister a nudge to wake her up.
"Hi, Daddy." Annie yawned.
"Scoot." Joel muttered as the girls budged over slightly, giving him enough room to sit down. "Bad day at work, huh?" Sarah asked.
Joel sighed. "What are you two still doin' up? It's late."
"Oh, crud! What time is it?" Sarah asked, turning around to look at the clock on the wall behind them.
"It's way past your bed time." Joel said.
"But it's still today." Sarah grinned before turning to look at Annie. "Can you get it?" She asked.
Annie nodded her head and slipped off the couch. She knelt down on the floor, reaching for a box that she and Sarah had hidden under the couch. "Girls, please not right now. I do not have the energy for this." Joel said.
With an excited look plastered on her face, Annie stood up and held a small box out towards Joel. "Here." She smiled.
"What's this?" Joel asked, taking the box from his youngest daughter. He opened it to reveal a watch inside.
"It's for your birthday." Sarah said. "You kept complaining about your broken watch, so we figured ya know? You like it?"
Joel took the watch out of the box and strapped it around his wrist. The tiniest of smiles appeared at the edge of this mouth, but the girls didn't notice. "Uh, honey, this-" He trapped the watch face. "It's nice, but I...I think it's stuck. I don't think it's workin'." He said.
"What?!" Sarah exclaimed as she grabbed Joel's hand, only to find that the watch was perfectly fine. "Oh, ha, ha." She said sarcastically.
"It's not broken?" Annie asked.
"No, Dad was just being a stupid and messin' with us." Sarah said, before she laid down. Annie climbed up onto the couch and sat in Joel's lap. "Where did you girls even get the money for this?" Joel asked as he wrapped his arm around his youngest daughter.
