With her elbow propped up on the side of the door, Hazel held her head in her hand and stared out into the darkening surroundings and watched as the rain poured down. Annie and Ellie had fallen asleep in the back seat while Joel and Hazel took turns driving. Hazel let out a deep sigh as she dropped her arm and moved her head to look out of the windshield. She had not spoken a word since leaving Bill's town, only replying to questions with a simple nod or shake of her head, or when it was appropriate, a shrug of her shoulders.
She had suppressed all of the anger surrounding her little sister's death and hid it somewhere deep down. Now, all she felt was depression and an emptiness that could never be filled by anything. She couldn't sleep either. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Tess's body after FEDRA had shot her down. She remembered the sound of the gunfire, the smell of gun smoke that hung in the air afterwards.
"Oh, man."
Hazel frowned and looked over her shoulder to see Ellie reading a comic book. The girl nudged Annie awake. "Are you seeing this?" She asked.
"Dude, I don't care about some comic. I just wanna sleep." Annie whined as Ellie disturbed her.
"Hey, what happened to sleeping?" Joel asked.
Ellie held up the comic book she had just finished reading. "Okay, I know this doesn't look like it, but this here is not a bad read. There is only one problem." She turned it around to show Joel and Hazel the final page. "To be continued! I hate cliffhangers."
"Where did you get that?" Joel asked.
"Uhh, back at Bill's." Ellie sheepishly answered. "Well, I mean, all this stuff was just lying there!"
Joel sighed. "What else did you get?"
Ellie dumped the comic book into Annie's lap and reached into her backpack. She rummaged around for a few seconds before she pulled out a cassette tape. "Here." She said, passing it through to Hazel. "This make you guys all nostalgic?"
"Y'know, this is actually before our time." Joel chuckled lightly. "This is a winner though." He put the cassette into player, and leaned back in the driver's seat as the music began to play. Hazel rolled her eyes and sat back in her original position to stare out of the passenger window.
Annie sighed. "It's better than nothin', I guess." She mumbled.
"Oh, I'm sure your friend will be missing this tonight." Ellie grinned as she picked up a porno mag. Annie's eyes widened and she tried to grab the magazine out of the teenager's hands, but she quickly moved over and kept it out of Annie's reach. "It's a little light on the reading, but it's got some interesting photos." Ellie said.
"Ellie, that ain't for kids!" Annie said.
Ellie unfolded one of the pages. "Whoa!" She exclaimed. "How the hell would he even walk around with that thing?"
