Annie pulled some of her hair back and used an old hair tie to create a messy half up, half down style. She had sat down on a log while Joel and Ellie walked through the forestry. Bill's town was just around the corner, so there wasn't much ground left for them to cover. She heard the soft sound of rocks hitting each other, and she looked over her shoulder to see Hazel creating a pile of smooth looking rocks in the middle of a small flower patch. "What're you doin', Hazel?" She asked.

"It's for Tess. She always liked this spot, always talked about how peaceful it was." Hazel quietly answered. Hazel had managed to stay strong and kept her emotions hidden from the others, but both Joel and Annie knew exactly how she felt. Annie understood her more than anyone. She had lost her little sister in a brutal way and was not allowed to lay her to rest. Knowing Tess's body was still at the capitol building, just lying there covered in blood and bullet holes.

Hazel closed her eyes as tears began to fall. Her back was turned to Annie, so she allowed the tears to fall instead of holding them in as she had been doing ever since leaving Boston. She raised her hand and covered to mouth to stop herself from audibly sobbing. She kept her eyes closed until she heard Annie sit down next to her. She used the back of her hand to wipe her tears away, but a stay tear managed to escape. "You should be with your dad, Annie." She muttered.

"He's got Ellie to worry about. I have you." Annie replied.

"You don't need to worry about me. I'll be fine." Hazel said as she stood up.

Annie sighed as she stood up. "Why haven't you talked about her?" She asked.

"Because I don't want to." Hazel replied.

"It helps to talk about things like this." Annie said.

"Let me guess, you read that in a book or something, right?" Hazel questioned.

"No, I actually know from experience. I used to talk about Sarah with Tess all of the time, especially on days when I missed her. Dad doesn't like talkin' about her and whenever somebody brings it up, he always shuts it down. He don't want to talk about Tess, I can see that in his face, and Ellie barely knew her. You're the only one I have left to talk to about stuff like this." Annie said.

For a moment, Hazel never said a word. She just stared at the young woman in front of her. That young woman and her father were now the only family that Hazel had left. She sighed quietly and stepped forward, pulling Annie into a tight hug. She cradled the back of Annie's head as she held her close. As she held Annie in her arms, a sudden overprotective surge came over her and it made her want to hold Annie even closer and even tighter; if that was even possible.

Eventually, Hazel let Annie go but then placed her hands on the young woman's shoulders. "I am never going to let anything happen to you." She said.

"Never thought you would." Annie replied, smiling softly. "C'mon, we better catch up with Dad and Ellie."
