SUMMER 2033

Annie sat at the table in her father's apartment rubbing her thumb over the circular scar on her arm. They had managed to get the bullet out and sewn up, but it left a scar. A permanent reminder of what happened to her and what she lost on the night the outbreak happened. She remembered everything that happened that night. The sights, sounds and noises. All of it.

She had tried to forget about it in multiple ways, but no matter what she did, nothing worked. She looked up when she heard Joel gasping for air. He had fallen asleep on the couch while they waited for their friend, Tess, to come back from wherever she went. "Good afternoon, Dad. Nice of you to finally join me in the land of the living." Annie said.

Joel rolled his eyes. "Where's Tess?" He asked.

"I don't know." Annie said as she pulled her sleeve back down. Joel sighed quietly when he realised she was covering the scar on her arm. He got out of the night without any physical injuries, but mentally, he was still trying to recover. Losing Sarah and almost losing Annie on the same night was something he wasn't sure he could ever get over.

Annie had heard him crying on multiple occasions. She tried to comfort him, but Joel wasn't the best at expressing how he truly felt. He used to be before the outbreak, but ever since that night, he hadn't been the same. Neither had Annie. Her innocence was stripped away from her when she was only eight years old. Tess and her sister, Hazel, were the only people Annie had allowed to get close to her. If she didn't let people in, it wouldn't hurt as much when they left. That's what she told herself.

Her relationship with Joel had become a lot stronger over the last twenty years. She was his only surviving child, and he was very protective of her. But when it came to girl things or relationship advice, Annie was more likely to talk to Tess or Hazel about it.

There was a sudden pounding on the door and Annie got up to open it. Tess walked into the apartment sporting a black eye and swollen cheek. "What the fuck happened to you?" Annie asked as Tess invited herself inside.

"Does it really matter?" Tess questioned. "How was your morning, old man?" She asked, looking at Joel, as she poured herself a drink. "Either of you want one?"

"No, I don't...want one." Joel said.

"But I do." Annie said grabbing herself a glass.

"Well..." Tess began as she poured the bourbon into the two glasses. "I have some interesting news for you--"

"Where were you, Tess?" Joel blurted out.

"West end district." The brunette answered as she gave Annie her drink, and took a sip of her own. Joel shook his head in disbelief. "Hey, we had a drop to make." Tess added.
