"C'mon. This way." Tess said as she lead the group down the street. She glanced back at them and saw that none of them looked particularly happy. "Hey! Pick it up. Look, we're almost done. Stay focused."
"Yes, ma'am." Annie said, a hint of sarcasm lacing her tone.
"It's right around this corner. C'mon." Tess said, brushing off Annie's sarcasm.
The group crossed a hurdle and moved into a swampy street nearby with the capitol building at the end of it. "There we go. Home stretch." Joel said.
"Um...just so it's out there. I can't swim." Ellie admitted.
"Look, it looks like it's shallow on the right side. Follow me." Annie said as she lead the girl into the swampy green water that flooded the road. She shivered a little as the cold water made it's way up to her knees.
"I'm glad Marlene hired you guys." Ellie said. "I know you guys are getting paid for this, but I'm trying to say thanks."
"Yeah, sure thing." Annie replied.
Hazel jogged up the front steps of the capitol building, glad to be out of the water and slowly pushed the front door open. She poked her head inside and sighed heavily before pushing the door open the rest of the way. Every Firefly inside was dead.
"No, no, no." Tess muttered.
"What happens now?" Ellie asked.
Tess began to frantically search the pockets on one of the bodies, while the others watched her in confusion. "What are you doing, Tess?" Hazel asked.
"Oh, god. Maybe they, ah, maybe they had a map or something to tell us where they were going." Tess said.
"How far are we gonna take this?" Hazel asked as she placed a hand on her sister's shoulder.
In what seemed like a burst of anger, Tess pushed Hazel's away and stood up. "As far as it needs to go." She snapped before looking at Ellie. "Where was this lab of theirs?"
"Oh, she never said. She only mentioned that it was someplace out west." Ellie admitted.
"What are we doing here? This is not us." Joel said.
Tess scoffed. "What do you know about us? About me?"
"I know that you are smarter than this." Joel said.
"Really? Guess what, we're shitty people, Joel. It's been that way for a long time."
"No, we are survivors!" Joel yelled.
"This is our chance-"
"It is over, Tess! Now we tried. Let's just go home."
Tess shook her head. "I'm not...I'm not going anywhere. This is my last stop."
