Chapter 21 - Christopher Chambers
*****

Eyeball sat in the far corner booth of the diner, also known as the one that had always been the cobras one. His eyes were on the packet of tobacco he had just brought, what would make him ruin all his hard work of quitting if he smoked.

Except this time, he was alone.

He leant back in the booth as he looked around at the emptiness around him. A few other people were sat around the diner as Eyeball leant forward, his elbows going on the table as he let his fingers slide through his hair, entangling in his curls.

A small groan escaped him until a cough was heard. Forcing his head up, he saw her. Of course it was her.

Magnolia sat down in the booth opposite him, her hands resting on her lap as she looked at him.

"You look frustrated Mr Chambers." Magnolia spoke softly as she tilted her head slightly, her gaze fixated on him.

"Frustrated doesn't cover it Lia." Eyeball mumbled as he groaned again before lifting his head.

Magnolia was silent as she reached out to where the new packet of tobacco was on the table.

"Smokings bad for you Lia." Eyeball mumbled as he watched her open it up to begin rolling one.

"It's not for me." She scoffed out. "I'm not putting those things near me, my perfume costs way too much to be dulled by their stink."

Eyeball watched in silence as her delicate thin fingers pulled out a paper, pinching a small amount of tobacco before she went to roll him one.

"Where'd you learn that?" He asked quietly, seeing it was practically perfect but she obviously didn't smoke.

"Betsy." Magnolia mumbled as she finished it before placing it on the table in front of Eyeball, his attention flicking between the cigarette and her.

"Your stepsister never smoked till she got with Ace." Eyeball mumbled as he picked up the cigarette and seemingly admired it. "This ain't bad you know."

"What was Ace like?" Magnolia asked quietly.

"Ace?" Eyeball asked with a laugh as he looked up at her. "Why'd you wanna know what Ace was like? Got bored of me already?" He almost teased her.

Magnolia smirked at Eyeball as she shook her head. "No no, just curious. Betsy told me a few things about him but something tells me they were a little biased."

"What did she say about him?"

"That he was a lying, sometimes cheating, thieving arsehole that could make up for it by fucking her in his car."

Eyeball almost coughed as Magnolia seemed to repeat Betsy's description of Ace so effortlessly, as if none of the words fazed her.

"Yeah I guess that pretty much sums Ace up as a person." He mumbled with a small laugh as he nodded slightly.

"He was actually like that?" Magnolia asked as she leant forward in her seat slightly, resting her elbows on the table.

"Go order me some grub and I'll tell you." Eyeball commanded, half nodding towards the counter.

"What?" She was in shock, no-one told her what to do, but Eyeball was becoming that person. "Beginning to think you're the arsehole, not Ace." She muttered as she got up from the booth bench and went over to the counter.

"Where do you think I learnt it from?" Eyeball retaliated with a laugh.

Eyeball's attention briefly scanned the diner again. It looked the same way it had when he was a teenager, from the faded blue and white tiles to the horrid pale yellow booth seats they were sat in.

He almost saw the whole group of cobras coming in as teenagers, Ace and him would always come in first with the others straggling behind. Vince would take someone's milkshake as they walked past. Billy would blow a kiss at whatever girl was behind the counter, acting as if he was some Casanova.

"Right I've ordered you food, now tell." Magnolia's voice broke him from his thoughts as she returned to sitting opposite him.

"Your sister was right, Ace was an arsehole. No matter what you tried to do or say, it was always his way or no way." Eyeball mumbled as he leant back in his booth seat.

"But you two were best friends?" She asked as she returned to let her elbows rest on the table between them, not so she could lean forward flirtatiously, but so she could actually listen and pay attention, which surprised even her.

Eyeball nodded as he sighed. "We were best friends, caused enough shit together. He had my back and I had his... Even against family."

"Family?" Magnolia asked quietly.

"I um-" Eyeball paused. "I had this younger brother see?"

"Like real blood brother?"

Eyeball nodded as he shuffled in his seat, sitting upright in his seat. "Christopher Chambers. The kid was a few years younger than me."

"Where is he?" She asked quietly, somewhat curious as to why she hadn't heard of someone named Christopher Chambers."

"He moved away, last I heard he went off to college with one of his little friends." Eyeball mumbled as he looked down at the cigarette in his fingers, he was aimlessly twirling and fiddling about with it.

Magnolia was silent for a moment, her eyes studying Eyeball and his facial features. Once more, this was seemingly a moment he wasn't faking it for the sympathy or attention.

"You said you stood with Ace against family... Did you stand with Ace against Christopher?"

Eyeball was silent again, the memory still so clear in his head. Then he nodded. "I barely made a move to stop him, think I just about said Ace's name." Eyeball scoffed to himself. "Like that made a difference."

"What happened?"

Eyeball was silent, he didn't know how to answer. He hadn't told anyone about the events of the summer of 1959, none of the other cobras speak about it.

"Mr Chambers..." Magnolia pushed again as he lifted his head to look up at her.

"I'll show you." He answered as he got up from the booth suddenly.

Magnolia didn't know what was happening, she didn't know what she was being shown. Yet she instantly got up to follow him.

"Mr Chambers, where are we-" Yet she stopped mid sentence as she felt his hand gripping her wrist and beginning to pull her out the diner.

"Wait! Your food!" The waitress went to shout out, but it was too late.

Eyeball had left, pulling Magnolia with him as he had seemingly forgotten about wanting to eat anything. He was going to show her the events of 1959, letting her see just what Ace was like and how he acted when he was with Ace.
