"Grandma, grandpa!" Lilly shouted out as she ran down the stairs with excitement filling up her body.
George, Lilly's grandfather, was not happy with the sudden loud sound of her voice. He was sitting in the couch doing his same routine every day. Smoking a cigarette while watching TV, same way it's been the past few years.
"What the hell did I tell you about yelling in the house?" Gorge was quick to shout back at her, not taking his eyes away from the TV.
Lilly's excitement had lowered down a bit, "Sorry, grandpa. I was just really exci—"
"Okay, whatever. Come over here." he cut her off with an aggravating sigh.
Lilly quickly scurried over to him, standing beside the couch so she didn't block his view. He lent out his hand with an open palm, so Lilly put out her arm and let him grab it since she knew what he was about to do next.
She braced herself before she felt the feeling of the cigarette being put out on her arm. Her body was so used to the feeling that it was now becoming a normal thing to feel. Of course it did hurt a little, but not as much as before.
George had let go of her hand and threw the cigarette in the ashtray on the coffee table, "Go empty that."
Lilly felt a tear in her eyes from the pain but she didn't let it fall, she never wanted to show a weak side to her when she knew it wasn't necessary. She was quick to pick up the ashtray and took it over to the trash can that was in the kitchen, spotting her grandmother, Ava.
"Good morning, grandma!" Lilly smiled as she threw away the stuff in the ashtray and set it down on the counter, "Do you know what today is?"
"Read a calendar, don't ask me." Ava said as she continued making what looked like a sandwich.
"The calendar doesn't have todays specific event on it, can you guess it?"
"No, Lilly. Just get out of my fa—"
"It's my birthday! Can you believe it? I'm a teenager now!" Lilly interrupted with joy as she jumped up and down.
Ava sighed, "Congratulations I guess?"
