"I want to take you out," Bucky says.
They had just finished lunch in the cafeteria and were casually strolling down the hall.
"Can we even do that? Isn't it dangerous?" She asks.
"There was a town that was being held hostage by Hydra a few months back. We took them down in a raid and freed the city. The owner of the local inn took us in for the night. Steve and I stayed up late talking to him and he asked about you when he saw my ring. He said that if I ever wanted, I should bring you to stay. I doubt Hydra will go back there anyways," he says.
She can't help but be excited at the prospect. She hasn't left this base since they got married. She's getting stir crazy and the idea of a night away from sweaty soldiers and well meaning brothers seems very appealing. They didn't even get a honeymoon since they had to be back to camp before dawn. A night to really forget that there's a war going on.
"I would love that," she says with a huge smile.
"I got permission from Steve to go tonight if you'd like," he says.
"You asked my brother for permission?" She asks offended.
"Ellie, you do know he's technically my commanding officer, right?" He asks.
Oh, right.
"Sorry. I forget that Steve actually has a lot of authority now. We've always been equal so it's strange is all," she says.
"I think even he forgets that he's in charge of me. Sometimes he looks at me like I'm the one that's supposed to have the answers but we both have no idea what we're doing. Usually we look to you for answers but..."
"Oh, I have no problem bossing you around if that's what you want," she says.
"Oh, Mrs. Barnes! I'd love for you to tell me what to do" He says with a wave of his eyebrows.
Her eyes widen in realization at his implication. She goes to smack him in the chest but he dances out of the way with a wide smile on his face.
"James Buchanan!" She yells but there's a hint of amusement in her tone.
"Wow. The full name. I must really be in trouble," he says.
"You're a child."
He rolls his eyes slightly and she glared playfully. Bucky cups her face in her hand and gives her his most falsely apologetic look.
"I'm sorry," he says.
"One of these days that look isn't going to work on me, you know," she says with a huff.
"It's worked since I was 13 so I figure if it's worked this long..."
God, she loved him. Even in times like these where his goal is to tease her into insanity. Especially in these moments where he tries to tease her into insanity. He has so much life in him even after all he's been through and will go through for the rest of the war. Not matter what life throws at them, he will always be her Jaime.
"What?" He asks when she doesn't respond.
"I just... Never change, Bucky Barnes," she says.
The funny thing is he feels he has changed. He feels like he's changed so much that he's surprised that when Lizzie showed up that he even resembled the man he was. Maybe it's because no matter what happens, their souls are connected. No matter how much happens, their souls will always recognize each other.
After a quickly shared kiss, they both agree to meet up in two hours after packing a bag. However, on the way, he is intercepted by Steve.
"I still don't think this is a good idea," Steve says immediately as he falls in step besides Bucky.
