She passes out as soon as the serum enters her system. Bucky immediately panics because that shouldn't happen, right? He almost wishes she had an experience like Steve had when he got the serum because it least he knows it was working.
Huxley did say that he had no idea what would happen to her. He shakily reaches down and puts his fingers to her neck and breathes a sigh of relief when he feels her pulse. He could actually feel her pulse getting stronger as his fingers lingered. He finally is confident she is stable enough that he goes and runs to find a doctor.
Steve is slumped down in the hallway with his head in his hands. He knows people must be staring but he doesn't care. He doesn't care about anything except that his sister is dead. He never really realized how much their connection was a part of him until it was gone. He felt so empty now, like there was a part of him missing.
He barely notices the people rushing around him until he hears one of the nurses say 'Elizabeth Barnes'. It makes sense they would be talking about her if she just died but why were the running? No one runs to a dead girl and these nurses look like they were on the way to save someone.
He knows that he shouldn't have hope but he follows after them. They rush in to the room and he goes to follow but he's stopped with a hand to his chest.
"They won't let you in. They kicked me out," Bucky says.
"She's alive? I don't... how?" Steve asks.
Bucky hesitates and he can read the guilt on his brother-in-law's face.
"What did you do?" Steve asks.
"What was I suppose to do? Let her die?" Bucky says defensively.
"I didn't want her to die either but you went against her wishes! She didn't want to be some experiment!" Steve says.
"I know! I know that I disregarded her wishes and if she hates me forever for it, so be it. However, I'll never regret saving her," Bucky says.
He knows that Lizzie won't forgive him for this easily. It will really come down to how much this cost her. It will depend on how much it's changed her.
"The twin connection is gone," Steve says.
"What?" Bucky asks.
"Whatever you did, severed our connection. I thought she was dead until I heard some nurses talking," Steve says.
They know that whatever the serum did to her must have changed things but they won't know exactly how bad it will be. She most likely will find that losing her twin connection will be a bad enough price let alone whatever else might happen.
"I'm sorry I took that from you," Bucky says.
He knows that their connection is something that both of them cherish. He knew Lizzie would be upset at him but Steve lost just as much.
"As much as I don't condone what you did, if that's the price for her being alive, I'll take it," Steve says.
They stand in the hallway in silence until a doctor comes out and faces them.
"It's truly a miracle. She's completely healed like magic. She's awake and had been requesting Captain Rogers. We kept insisting that you were just outside but she didn't believe us," he says.
So that confirms that the loss of connection wasn't just one way. Not wanting to leave his sister in pain for a second more, he enters the room.
It's a testament to how fast the healing was that when Steve entered the room, Lizzie was over to him in an instant and throwing her arms around his neck.
