Chapter 13

    He was full of questions about why I needed to get the amulet by midnight, and what it was, and how long it was hidden, etc. Finally he asked where it was hidden. "It's in an oak tree, but it's very distinctive, It dead and completely black. Around the base nothing grows, and the dirt is black within a 20-foot radius around it." "I know where that is." He told me. I got hopeful that he might help me find it, when he continued, "Suppose for a moment I do decide to help you, and suppose we actually manage to find this amulet. What then?" "Well we go to drop off point and destroy it, then we will.." just then he interrupted me. "And then my father's coming after you?" I took a breath and told him "It's just a matter of finding and destroying it before he finds me." He didn't seem satisfied with that answer. I didn't know whether to be flattered or annoyed. Before I could make up my mind he spoke again, "I will help you, under one condition." "And what is that?" I asked. "Promise me Maria won't find out about this." He told me. "Ok I promise. Are you two dating?" I asked trying not to sound very interested. "Yah, I guess you could call it that." He answered me, and we both dropped it.

We continued through the woods, Robin directing me. We were nearing the center of the forest when it started to get dark. "How far is it?" I asked him. "Quite a bit further." He answered just then my foot with the sprain hit a rock and I cried out in pain. "Your ancle still isn't any better?" He asked. "No. I haven't been able to rest it." We walked on in silence for a while until we came to a bit of a cliff. Robin started to make it down with ease, but I almost fell on my first step. I teetered on the edge and just as I was about to fall I felt Robin's strong arm caught me, and hall me back up. "Here, take my arm and I will help you down." He told me. It was slow going but it worked. When we came to the final rock step there was a drop off. He jumped down quite easily and as I was pondering how I was going to get down he held his arms out and said, "Jump, I'll catch you." my heart fluttered. But I was brought back down to earth when I remembered that he was in a relationship. I took a deep breath and jumped. I felt like I was plummeting and just before I hit the ground strong arms caught me. He held me there for a second as we looked at each other. My bright blue eyes looking into his soft hazel ones. Then like a flash of light we both snapped back into consciousness and he set me down. We continued walking. "Thank you." I said after a while. He just nodded and didn't look at me. "I'm sorry." I said. "About what?" he asked still not looking at me. "Your hand." I told him, that made him look. "Why would you apologize for that? You were just defending yourself." "I know," I told him "I just feel bad that I hurt you. you're actually very nice." "Ha! And what is that supposed to mean?" he asked. "Does everything have to have a meaning?" I asked him. He didn't answer me but held my gaze for a moment.
