Flashback
I was so excited to start again. A new beginning where I could be anyone I've ever wanted. Nobody knew my name, or where I was from, or how I ended up here. I was just someone.
Carefully, I took my clothes out of my bag and took a glance at the empty bed across from mine. Who will be my new roommate? Maybe someone bubbly and full of energy. Maybe someone reserved and quiet.
Whoever it was, in the back of my mind I made sure that the first thing I would do is try to become their friend. No matter what. My first friend in this new world I just entered. One full of hope and ambitions.
There was a gentle knock on the door while I was unpacking my last box, the one full of books. Full of excitement I stood up, almost pushed all of my things out of the way and opened the door, knowing that behind it was him. The one I've been waiting for.
I was met with a boy shorter than me, with fluffy auburn hair with curtain bangs and freckles all over his face. He was red, blushing most probably and shyly avoiding my eyes. Cute. That was the first thing I thought when I saw him.
"Hi" he said.
"Hello" I responded.
"This is also my room... We'll be roommates" he was clutching onto his bag, his knuckles turning almost white.
What caught me by surprise was his accent. It was southern, but nevertheless adorable. I stepped out of the way to let him inside, and he smiled at me.
"I'm Mateo" I introduced myself and he nodded.
"I'm Tobias" he smiled again, but this time looked right at me.
He sat down on his new bed, almost as if he's taking in every sensation. The way it feels under his fingertips as he traces his hand against the clean sheets.
"Where are you from Tobias? You have an accent"
"Oh" he says and looks down, seemingly embarrassed by what I just said.
"Not that I think it's weird or anything! Yeah! Accents are nice" I shake my head and wave my hands, desperate not to make him misunderstand my question.
"Ah... It's fine. I hope I'll get rid of it as soon as possible. I'm from Texas by the way. What about you?" he kind of stumbles over his words, trying his best to fix the way he's talking, not to let his accent get the best of him.
"Born and raised here in San Francisco"
He smiled at that. Back then his accent was really thick but now you can barely make it out. Even though it was only two years ago, he's changed a lot. Now when he's talking he sounds different, but sometimes his words slip and you are able to hear that accent again, for a brief second.
It reminds me of who he used to be. A shy boy and me, hopelessly trying to become friends with him. Of course, that was before everything that happened. The kiss photo, the fights and endless nights of bickering and laying awake, glaring at him.
We got along pretty well at first, then I met Greg and Sarah. I considered Tobias just my roommate, we grew apart. He would help me with my assignments sometimes or to study for exams.
He's suprisingly good at physics even though he's an English major. Always having his nose in books, staying silent and not talking more than it is necessary. But then when the whole thing started, I was surprised to see him stand up for himself.
It was refreshing, even though I did not want to admit it.
"Well Tobias I really hope we can be good friends" I looked at him with a smile, extending my hand for him to take.
He smiled back and shaked my hand.
"Of course. I hope we'll get along"
