HI guys quick one ive been drafting for a whilee

Ezra POV

"Now remember, Ezra," Ava said, fixing my collar for the third time, "confidence."

I nodded like I knew what that meant.

Ava stepped back, looking me over like she'd just completed a full renovation project. Then she gestured toward the car.

I followed her gaze.

The car.

The... plan?

Fake candles lined up neatly around it. A bouquet of dahlias sitting on the hood like they were waiting to be admired. And on top of the car (where I was apparently supposed to stand) was a boombox.

A real one.

"You're going to stand up there," Ava said, pointing, "call her out, press play, and ask her THE question! That's it."

That's it.

Yet it felt too much, it didn't feel right

I didn't think it was bad. It was just... not her.

Maudie wasn't the type to like this kind of thing. She'd probably laugh or smile out of pity and then ask why I was acting like I was in some old movie.

I climbed onto the car anyway.

Because Ava was watching.

Because I asked for help.

Because maybe I was overthinking it.

The metal dipped under my weight. The boombox sat next to me like it was judging me.

"Go on," Ava whispered, already holding up her phone.

Of course she was recording.

I looked at Maudie's window.

Nothing.

No movement. No sign she was even there.

And suddenly the whole thing felt... loud.

Not the noise. Just everything else.

I climbed down.

"Ezra, what are you doing?" Ava asked.

I shook my head.

"This isn't her."

Ava frowned.

"Any girl would love this."

"Yeah," I said, already walking to the trunk, "but she's not just any girl."

That stopped her from arguing back, instead she gave a genuine smile,

"Well, go get her your way."

I smiled back, as she gave me a quick hug before letting me execute my original plan.

I opened the trunk and grabbed what I had shoved in there earlier. Just in case.

The puzzle box.

A slightly squished bag of peanut butter sandwiches.

And the dahlias.

I shut the trunk before I could change my mind.

Then I walked to her door.

Each step felt weirdly loud, like I was doing something I wasn't supposed to.

I knocked.

There was a bit of movement inside, then the door opened.
