Running through the halls after school always gave me the creeps. I guess it was because a place that is loud, busy, and humid becomes quiet, calm, and cool. I took an audible breath with a shiver from the cold crisp air. I ran to my locker and grabbed my prom folder and a pair of after-school clothes.
I ran and changed in the girl's room then was about to grab the handle to the ladys' room when I heard Mis Aubright talking outside the door. that was barbras mom aubright altman. you know the saying 'like mother, like daughter' well that applies. her mom was such a snooty stuckup little princess except she was the evil stepmother in Cinderella 3 years in a row for theater. that's right. they did Cinderella 3 years in a row. just cause she wanted to be the star.
unfortunately, the saying 'beauty gets you everything' also applies. the reason she was at our school was not to pick up her daughter but to make sure her daughter got what she wanted. needless to say, showing up late wasn't winning me any favors.
"well if she can't show up on time we might just have to kick her off prom committee," mis Altman said
"no, whatever the reason for her absence I'm sure there's a reason." came Principle Carsons voice
"Carson you know Barbra hasn't missed a single meeting, always was on time, and I mean look at her. She can do a much better job than that Hannah girl," Altman said in a seductive voice
"Are you really going to make me so sad"
"STOP this Aubright. or il take Barbra off the committee right now. we don't take bribery here lightly understand" Carson said firmly. he is such a great principle. maybe I should get him something nice to show my appreciation.
"How dare you," Altman said in a feigned voice of hurt accusation
"Stop pushing me," Carson said making it clear that that was his final warning
"Fine, whatever. Your loss at a great leader," she said wiping her hair back. just like Barbra did at lunch earlier today. turning she walked in the door.
turning around and walking back Carson mumbled under his breath "That woman will be the death of me. Hannah, you better have a good reason for being late" I waited about a minute then peeked my head out the door and saw mister carson turn the corner. then I stepped toward the auditorium.
stepping into the auditorium was like stepping into a starry night. we already had most of the decorations up and ready we had mystical-sounding music playing in the background.
"well look what the cat drug in," Barbra said snippily "We were just talking about getting a new lead"
"ya and it sure ain't you," I said
that took her back along with everyone at the table for the planning committee.
"Please like she wasn't saying that to make herself out to be little miss Bigshot," I say accusingly
"That's enough mis bridge," Altman said "You might regret what will come from a language like that"
"Please you got turned down by Carson faster than a rat out of hell," I say in a peppy smug voice to mimic Altman
"So where are we? what did I miss?" I said getting back on track
"Speaking of missing" Altman tried to bring up again.
realizing that she wouldn't shut up unless I gave her a minute I said "Later mis Altman. I need to make up for my tardiness." I looked at her with a false sincerity that would look to everyone elts like a sincere response. even though I was going to ignore the bitch after the meeting.
