4: birthday gift

I woke up by the sound of my door when someone call my names few times, I look at the clock and it's twelve in the midnight. I walk in half sleep towards the door and open it viewing grandma with the cake on her hands. She smile softly and hands out the cake toward me.

I was taken aback but then I remain calm, still having clueless thought in my mind.

"Happy birthday my sweet puppy!" She whisper softly.

It's my birthday, I just remembered it now. My express become soft after she sing a birthday song, I blow the candle and come closer to her and give her a big hug. She gives everything I need even though we're poor but she never make me feel like it. She's there when no one was, she picked me up when everyone look down on me.

She decided to take care of me when the world turn it's back to me, she took care of me as if I'm her child. We're not blood related but I love her like my mother, my everything. I never knew about my existence, where I come from, where my parents is but she completed all of it.

She is my mother, my grandma, my father she complete everything and I can't ask for more. "thank you for raising me for 23 years grandma, I love you.. and I wish for you to stay with me longer okay?" I whisper to her ears, tears fell out from my eyes as the feeling inside of me is mixing up.

"I can't promise that sweetheart, I don't know how long I can live but.. I want to see you happy and successful before I close my eyes. It's your birthday make a wish for something else, don't waste it for me.." she say and caressed my hair gently. I shook my head and clear my throat before speaking again, "no.. I want you with me.. I want you to stay with me longer.. until I find my own life, until I find someone that can stay by my side .." I say softly.

She pull away and look me in the eye, she caressed my cheek and brushes few stranded of my hair out from my face. "please do sweetheart.. I want to watch over you happily without worrying about anything else.." she smile and kiss my forehead.

"Happy birthday my sweet child" she smile as I see drop of tears left her side of her eyes.

After that she told me to go back to sleep so I do. I spend an hour thinking about everything. Our house never look like house, I don't know what to do anymore. Grandma's sickness is getting worse which is she needs to be examine every one month, her medicine? It needs to take forever.

I sigh deeply and close my eyes for a moment but then I fell into a deep slumber.

I get myself ready for the day, I close the door behind me and was about to walk towards the main door but before I can step out from the house, the old greedy man come to living room as he start mumbling something. I distance myself from him, not wanting the scent of alcohol stuck to my shirt.

"HANEUL ! Give me some money!" He shout, and then laugh sarcastically. "Can't you at least be more matured? Stop with all this thing, it will affect you later" I says, looking at him in disgusting way. He send me a glare as he walk closed to me before throwing the bottles to the wall that makes it crashed to pieces.

I stepped back as I feel so scared by him getting near me. I scan around the house when I realized that it's only two of us and grandma is out for some groceries.

I was about to run out from the house but he grab my hair before I can run away from him, I hissed in pain as he grabbed it hard and pull me back and push me against the wall that makes me fall to floor.

"HOW DARE YOU TRYNA DISCIPLINE ME ! YOU CAN'T EVEN MAKES LIKE YOUR LIVING IN A GOOD LIFE ! HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT TO ME !" he shout.

"Let me go ! If not you're going to jail again!" I talk back , trying to get out from his grip when he grab my wrist. "ARE YOU THREATENED ME NOW?!" he grab my chin that makes me look at him as he gives a slap to my face.
