[Chapter 8]
I returned from a relaxed weekend to a surprising day at my work.
All my belongings, documents, and personal items were gone, leaving behind an empty workspace. The only thing left was a white envelope in the center of the barren desk.
"Oh, the perfect start to the week," I muttered sarcastically, my frustration evident. "I always wanted an office with minimalist decor."
My heart pounded in my chest as I read the letter. The words seemed to jump off the paper, taunting me with their hidden meanings. I could feel my hand trembling slightly, and I tried to control the rising panic inside me. "Stay calm, Daisy," I whispered, taking a deep breath.
I walked over to Travis's cubicle, my mind racing with thoughts and questions. As I approached, I saw his eyes glued to the letter, his expression a mix of shock and disbelief.
"Well, this is just fantastic," I said. A wry smile on my lips, trying to lighten the tension. "It looks like we both won the lottery today."
"Your ex is crazy," he said.
"What did yours say," I asked first.
Travis informed me that he was receiving a promotion and a pay raise, but there was a catch-he would be joining the marketing team; it was notorious for its demanding workload and long hours on the second floor. Unlike other departments with more flexible break times, the marketing team had restrictions on accessing floors above the seventh without superior permission.
I was taken aback by the news.
I knew it might not seem unreasonable to others. After all, Travis was getting rewarded for his hard work, but the sacrifices he had to make seemed rather daunting. Standing on the thread of uncertainty and dealing with the pressures of the marketing world didn't sound like a walk in the park.
My letter held a similar message, but the destination was entirely different. I got moved to the fourteenth floor-a floor I had never been to. And it just happens to be on the same floor as our new lovely, kind, generous, and humble boss.
The irony didn't escape me-while Travis got sent to a floor he couldn't easily access, I was being placed directly in the territory of Alexander the Great. It was a twisted power play. Maybe he thought this would be a way to keep tabs on me, to ensure I didn't slip through his fingers again.
That bitch.
"I must have won the lottery of crappy job assignments."
Travis shot me a sympathetic look, but his news didn't seem better. "Yep, we both hit the jackpot of inconvenient promotions," he said with a wry smile.
I sighed at the absurdity of the situation. "Oh! Who wouldn't want to work with a marketing department notorious for making people work like slaves?" I replied.
"And let's not forget the joy of having restricted access to floors above the seventh without a permission slip from the higher-ups," Travis added, his tone matching mine.
I shook my head, feeling a mixture of frustration and disbelief. "Well, isn't it just amazing? I can't wait to take the elevator to the fourteenth floor daily and rub shoulders with our charming new boss."
"But congrats, Travis. I can't believe they're rewarding your hard work with the joy of standing on the edge of a cliff all day long. What a fantastic promotion!"
Travis rolled his eyes, catching onto my dry humor. "Yeah, it's like they want me to be a tightrope walker in the marketing circus," he replied, shaking his head. "But hey, at least I get a pay increase, right?"
