CHAPTER 27

                 ELIJAH

She was not thinking straight, if she was, then she would realize, just as I have, that this plan of her's was a terrible one.

"Are you seriously going to let her go through with this?" Jaxon's grating voice further fried my already frayed nerves. I spurned around to shoot him a glare that would hopefully convey just what I was feeling at the moment. He flinched back.

"And how do you expect me to do that? She's fucking determined," I growled out, instead of flinching away again, he simply frowned.

"I get that, but we still need a plan or something. She's not listening to reason," He was adamant on irritating me, and I was not having it.

"Stop talking to me. It's taking all of my willpower to not rip your head off," I really needed him to stop talking. He opened his mouth to retort when Maeve's light voice butted in.

"Guys? what are you doing here? There are intruders trying to advance into the school you know,"  She sassed, skipping over in her combat boots and silver mane. My heart seemed melt a little  every time I saw her. I really did not understand it. I was supposed to be her protector, and maybe companion. I was never supposed to feel this way, I was never supposed to tune my heart's beat to the rhythm of her's.

"I know that. And I also know that you are being stubborn," I gritted, trying to suppress the urge to shake reason into her pretty head. But judging by how frail she was, she might not survive it.

"I told you, I am not. I had an epiphany," She repeated the same thing she had been repeating for the past hour. Something in my eyes made her turn to Jaxon, hands slightly raised in supplication. "Haven't you ever felt that way? That there's something you must do no matter the dangers?" She was earnest, that I would admit. He turned to look at me with an odd look in his eyes. It was an uncomfortable emotion I could not identify. I reared back slightly, trying to move out of range. Then he blinked, and it was over. He turned stiffly to Maeve.

"Yes I have," His smile was gentle, nostalgic. "I knew my coming here was risky, I could have been killed before I even made it to you guys. But it was something I had to do," He ended, and Maeve's eyes shone with something that looked like tears. I messaged my temples.

"Hey Paris, we are all set. Are you ready?" A new voice interrupted, and a white haired boy bounced to view, green eyes shining with excitement.

"San!" She exclaimed, and turned to us. "Guys this is San. He is the librarian, and my friend," She explained, and Jaxon's brows shot up.

"Yea, and so," I smiled as he echoed my thoughts perfectly, and now it was Maeve's turn to frown.

"So, he has spent more time with books than any of us here, and knows a lot more about Mystics than any of y'all," She ended stubbornly.

"Yes, and the car is all set. Come with me," The San guy offered, tall and lanky, he was clearly built for speed and not combat. I stopped her again.

"You know you need volunteers right? I can't force anyone to accompany you, you know that right?" I wanted her to see reason, but instead she smiled, and bounced away.

Was this what heartbreak felt like? The thought that someone you cherish so much do not even cherish themselves the same way. She was going to jump into fire without a single thought of the people she was leaving behind, about me. I turned the other way.

"Elijah? are you there?" Ashton's voice echoed in my mind, he sounded breathless and my heart sped up, remembering the intruders situation. "Yes I am here. What is It?" I inquired, already running to him. "We can't hold them off Elijah, something is wrong. The wolves are already here,"  The panic in his voice was very clear now.
