CHAPTER 28
"Sooo, are we seriously not talking about it?" San shoved his head backwards to peer at the rest of us seating at the back with a disappointed look on his face. I released a frustrated breath.
"No San, we are not talking about it," I repeated for the hundredth time.
"But we have quite the journey ahead of us, we could all use a story," He was not giving up. I glared at him.
"Well narrate one then," This boy was really testing my patience. I should have left his ass back at school for wolves to bite.
"Cmon San, enough. Let the couple have their privacy," Dre interjected with an amused smile on his lips. Mine dropped open in surprise.
"Couple? Who said we were a couple? Did he say that?" I sputtered anxiously. My heart doing flips in my chest. Everyone turned to smirk at my outburst, and revel in my fall from grace. Even Kaz took his eyes off the road for a moment to stare at me through the rear view mirror. A faint smile curving his lips.
"Alright! I like him alright? Are y'all satisfied?" I shrieked, fed up with the knowing looks and smug grins they were all spotting, as if we were all sharing some big secret.
"Well, if your dramatic display earlier was to count for anything, then trust me when I say we already knew that," Dante dismissed, earning a snort from Luca beside him.
"I really don't like you right now," I pouted childishly, and he scoffed.
"Really? However shall I go on?" He retorted with something suspiciously like sarcasm in his voice. I narrowed my eyes again.
"Okay! So y'all don't like anyone?" I asked, desperate to bring up a topic to avoid thinking about the potential dead bodies we may have to come back to, or to whom they would belong, and to also take the spotlight off me. Everyone shrugged.
"Personally? I don't think so," Noah answered, a grin on his face. "But you know what? I think Dante might have an admirer," He ended, and Luca sucked in a deep breath, before turning to Dante.
"Hey sport," He drawled, eyes looking a little less sleepy. "Anything you wanna share?" He asked, while Dante looked so uncomfortable I had to snicker to myself.
"No, nothing. And ignore Noah, he's just kidding. Right Noah?" He asked, one eyebrow raised warningly. The former simply concentrated on his nails, with a whistle on his lips.
"C'mon Noah. You can't just drop something like this on us without explaining further ," San whined again. Face crumpled and mouth sullen.
"Or, you could just tell us about the Mystics instead. What do you think?" Dre stepped in, reasonable as always.
"You know what? That's a great idea Dre. We need to know the do's and don'ts". I agreed with Dre, and everyone leaned forward to look at a still sullen San.
"Alright fine. Get ready for an history lesson guys, you are going to need it. I brought a book." See? He could be serious when steered in the right direction. I suppressed the proud grin trying to stretch at my lips from surfacing.
"That's fine. Let's just get through this and come out alive. Right guys?" Dante asked, and we all nodded. Me with extra fervor, because I really, really, needed to not die tonight.
"So, the Witches are not all called Mystics you know," He started, and my brows immediately furrowed with confusion "that's not what I was told," Looking around, I noticed everyone else was spotting something similar.
"You all looked surprised, anyway it's true. The Mystics are a group of witches blessed with the power of gods. They have the ability to see into your past, and foretell your future," He ended, and I was floored once again. This was relevant information, but it was also new information. And not for the first time, I wondered if I had bitten more than I should have.
