"Hi Uncle Luke."

A greying, newly hopeless Luke had snuck into the Millennium Falcon for a reason he did not know. Nostalgia? To feel a youth that he knew he no longer felt in his brittle bones? Hope? Perhaps to put the past behind him? Well if it had been the latter than of course he knew the past would chase him in the form of his deeply irritating and horribly sweet old droid friend, R2-D2.

And apparently the holographic form of his niece.

"I'm sure you've met Rey already and I somehow already know that behind your careless mask you've grown fond of her." Padme said, smiling softly as Luke marvelled at how much like her mother she looked through the hologram. It was as though he was nineteen, sat beside Obi Wan Kenobi while a holographic Leia begged for his help. It stirred something within him. Something he thought had already died. "You could never lie to my mother nor can you lie to me."

Luke laughed at that, an action foreign after so many years alone.

"Remember when you let me hold your lightsaber for the first time and I said I would much prefer one that came in a white light and you asked if it was because my mother wears white but I said no and you asked why. Do you remember what I said?"

Luke remembered, of course he did.

"I said, 'because you always wear white, uncle Luke, and that must be why you're so brave." Padme began to laugh lightly at that and Luke felt an ache in his chest. "I mean, now of course I know my mother's wardrobe was always far better than yours and white clothes don't make you brave but I idolised you, uncle, like so many other people do. But the difference is I actually know you. And I still idolise you. Even after every bad ting you think has stained those with robes black."

Luke had forgotten how wise his niece was and he was filled with the pang of pain that came with all the time lost that could have been spent watching his niece grow.

"I don't want to try to convince you to come home, I don't want to beg. I am my father's daughter after all and the maker knows that Solo's don't beg." Padme said, the ghost of a smile passing over her face at the mention of her father and a dull pain appeared in Luke's heart. He missed Han. "But I want to say that, I need you. I need my uncle and my mother needs her brother. And somewhere in the galaxy... my brother needs you. My father knew that and he died for it. I am willing to die for it too."

Luke nearly shut off the hologram but R2 moved back so the button was out of reach and the hologram continued.

"And before you inevitably shut this off and go and meditate or whatever you Jedi's do, I wouldn't know seeing as I didn't apparently make the cut." Padme said, sending a playful gaze Luke's way which made him flush with embarrassment. He had truly wanted her to join them but the world needed more time for that kind of change. Something that still sounded silly to him, that excuse. He knew the truth. That she was more powerful than anyone would ever be able to predict. "I want to tell you that it's not you fault."

Luke's breath hitched.

"I had a dream, the night... Ben became Kylo." Padme continued, sighing lightly. "I dismissed it as a nightmare at first but now I know it's the truth. I know he killed them all and I know what prompted him to do that. And I know why you think it's you but I need you to know it wasn't."

Padme shuffled around behind where R2 was filming her, apologising for knocking him slightly before she drew something out and brought it into the recording.

The light saber with the white light he had gifted her before he left.

"The man who gave me this, who believed in hope and resistance against evil, is still within you. He is you. Even though you think he is gone. Uncle Luke, I can't do this without you. I miss you, I have so much more I want to ask-"

Luke heard a knock on the door where Padme had been recording the message and his brow furrowed, hearing the words, "hurry the hell up, princess, this revnog isn't gonna finish itself," come through the audio somewhat crackly and he saw his niece roll her eyes fondly at the voice.

"And that would be Dameron, I need to introduce you to him, you would find him just as irritating as I do." Padme said, a small smile on her face and Luke couldn't help but think of Han and Leia as he did so often. A tear fell down his cheek as he laughed at her words. "I miss you, Luke, come home. And teach me how to use this damn thing on Dameron-"

Then the transmission ended.

And Luke made a choice.
