Determined

I paced around the audio/visual booth as the next line of people walked out onto the stage.

My headset was secure to my head, the microphone piece curving around towards my mouth.

I could feel my breath quivering in anticipation as I watched out the window facing the stage..

I mean, of course Niall was going to make it right?

There was no way he couldn't.

The judges were smart people.

Especially Uncle Si, he's absolutely brilliant, he knew talent when he saw it.

And Niall had talent.

His voice was so unique.

This was only bootcamp.

Being the controller of the technical aspects of the stage, I made sure to try and help him out as much as I could.

I wouldn't call it "cheating"- because he was amazing on his own. I prefer the term "secretly assisting".

Whenever he was in a group of people, I made sure to aim a bit more of the light onto him, making him stand out even more than before.

Not like he needed it though- his smile lit up the stage anyways.

I made sure during groups that his microphone was a tiny bit more articulate than the rest,

And if he ever got nervous, I made sure to flicker the side light on stage left in the wing.

Only he would notice it, everyone else would think it was a faulty lightbulb.

But Niall knew it was me, up in the booth, watching him, cheering him on.

Plus, he's got an amazing stage presence, the judges would be foolish not to put him through.

The names began getting called.

With every person who made it, there were that many heartbreaks of those who didn't.

That string went off, as a new group filed in after them.

My breath hitched.

A guy, my own age, with blonde hair and a brown sweater was the seventh person to walk on in that group, a good twenty people following him.

And then they began calling names.

I waited,

And waited,

For what seemed like forever.

On the verge of tears, listening in my headpiece for his name to be called.

It might have been a trick of my eye, but I could've sworn I saw his lip tremble as they announced the last name.

No.

I must've heard it wrong.

There is no way possible.

My high hopes came crumbling down as Niall broke out in tears, along with many others, as half of the group walked towards the door to the lobby.

I know I should've stayed and supervised the control room, just in case there was some sort of malfunction

But I didn't give it a second thought at the time.

I swung open the door to leave the booth and began sprinting towards the lobby.

~

I scanned the crowd, pushing my way through to find him.

It was no use.

There were too many people, and I wasn't nearly tall enough to find my way.

But I had to, for him.

And I was determined.

"NIALL?" I shouted over the buzzing of emotions.

A blonde guy with a brown sweater and jeans caught my eye, far away from myself in the crowd.

And apparently, someone else found him too.

It was too far away to see who, but I could here one of our workers call Niall and pull him through the crowd, along with four more workers helping guide eight other contestants towards the door to go backstage.
