Vulnerable

"WE'RE THROUGH! DID YOU SEE THAT? WE MADE IT! WE'RE ON TO THE LIVE SHOWS!"

Shaken, I was lifted by someone, up into the air, spinning me around. Blonde hair glistened in the sunlight, his bright blue eyes meeting mine as he placed me back down. A broad smile beamed across his face as the sun beat down on both of us.

A few moments later, four other guys came sprinting over and nearly tackled me, deluging me in a massive hug.

They all were thanking me, making short conversation, but non of the words registered in my mind. It was wandering elsewhere, the image of my mum's life being taken before me over and over again.

Although I had had the flashback before, this time, it was all too real- too vivid, too detailed, too morbid, which scare me the most.

After a little while, Zayn, Harry, Louis, and Liam ran back inside to call home.

Niall lingered in front of me. His body stood a foot away from mine, eyebrows were furrowed as he stared at me intently, scanning me up and down. "Something is wrong, I know it." he stated anxiously, "What is it?" he pulled me into a hug, wrapping his arms around my waist.

I rested my head on his chest for a long moment of time.

He was warm, and comfortable.

In his arms was one of the few places I felt right, and yet, I also felt quite vulnerable. If I stayed, I let myself go, and I needed to be able to pull off the illusion to Niall that I was alright.

"Nothing." I lied. I straightened back up and looked him in the eyes, squaring my shoulders, pulling myself away from him. "I'm okay," I falsely insured, taking a breath in, I attempted to fake the best smile I could, while on the inside my head was throbbing, "Go inside and phone your family. Tell them the good news, I am very proud of you." I nodded towards Simon's entrance into the house from the outside patio.

Unsurely, Niall did what he was told.

"By the way, we're all going out tonight," he called before going inside

I stood outside for a long while, absorbing in my thoughts, as everyone else filed into the house.

Bright rays of sunlight kissed my skin, somewhat warming the emptiness inside that I was becoming all too familiar with.

Why is it that all who are good in this world, and have the most to live for, get it all taken away from them so quickly?

I couldn't erase the image of my mum locking eyes with me in her last few moments of life.

Her big brown eyes welled up with tears, her pink lips separated slightly, as her final breaths escaped from her mouth.

And how, within a split second, it was all over.

As the color drained from her face.

As she sunk to the ground.

As she mouthed "I love you" as her last words before the train pulled me away, her image fading out of vision in the dim tunnel.

And how I remember pressing my hand against the glass of the window as we sped away, wishing that I had her to cling to instead.

How so easily she had been taken from me.

Adjusting my button up shirt and ruffling my hair, I took a deep breath trying to calm myself down. I knocked on the door to Brodie's room at Simon's house.

After a few moments, I could hear the jiggling of a doorknob as whoever was on the other side unlocked it.

"Hello, Niall." Stan greeted, a warm smile across his face as he reached out to take my hand. His hand firmly shook mine, our eyes not breaking contact until he let go.

"Brodie, Niall is here!" he informed her through the closed bathroom door.

"Just a minute," I heard her voice call back.

"Niall," Stan began to address me, his tone growing more serious, "I want you to take very good care of her. I want her back here before ten."

"Of course Sir, no issue with that at all. She is in good hands." I stumbled, assuring him.

"Call me Stan" he patted me on my back, attempting to break the tension.

I formed a smile with a bit of effort in reply, and nodded.

This was my first real date. My whole body was trembling with anticipation.

"Ready." Brodie's voice sounded closer as I heard a door shut. She walked up behind Stan and he stepped aside to let her through.

My breath hitched in my chest as I looked at her.

Her long tawny hair fell down her shoulders, reaching her elbows. Her tanned skin was clad by a stunning raspberry-colored lace dress and matching high heeled boots. Instead of her usual glasses, she was wearing contacts, revealing thick black eyelashes framing her dark eyes, which wisked me to another world when she looked at me. And when she smiled, her high cheekbones pressed upwards, her big beautiful teeth sparkling as she laughed a bit at the look on my face.

At that moment I realized she was my world, and all of the sudden I wanted to do anything, be anything, just to keep that beautiful smile on her face forever.

"You look... wow." I mumbled at a loss for words.

Her cheeks tinted a deep carmine color as she glanced at her feet.

"Thank you."

I reached for her hand, and as it slid perfectly into mine, we said our goodbyes to Stan as we began walking outside to the van.

The rest of the guys were already inside, Louis in the driver seat, as I heard a few whoops and hollers echo from the windows, big smiles on all of their faces as they stared at the two of us. I shook my head, laughing, then released Brodie's hand to open the door for her.
