Chapter 1

Sophie sat on the floor of her room, in a bundle of blankets on the floor, with tears staining her cheeks. She had stopped crying a while ago, but didn't seem to have the energy to wipe the tear trails off her face. She was trying her best to not think about what had just happened, but it was really hard. He was literally the first elf she had ever met. He was her cognate. How could she not think about him? After a sigh, she decided that enough was enough. Sophie sat up and her gaze fell on the enormous floor to ceiling windows facing the ocean. It was around midnight, from what she could tell. Fitz had left at dusk. Fitz... She pushed the thought into a far corner of her mind. She couldn't be this heartbroken girl weeping about the notorious Wonderboy. She was the Moonlark.

Even though she hated and loved the thought at the same, it gave her the motivation to get her sad butt off the nest of softness on her floor and into her shower. She imagined all of her problems washing away with the colorful streams of water splashing over her body. She washed and rewashed her hair so many times she lost count. By the time she got out, the bottles of shampoo and conditioner on the shower ledge were all but used. She put her hair up in a ponytail and started cleaning her expansive room. She made her bed, carefully folding the soft lavender sheets and fluffing the soft pillows. She picked up the bundle of fluff on her floor and put it in the little basket the gnomes had recently put in her room to collect her laundry. Once her room was back in order, she grabbed Ella and settled under the covers thinking of a certain teal-eyed Vacker.

Sophie woke up to see the bright sunrise blaring at her eyes through the windows in her room. Ugh, she thought, I forgot to close the blinds again, after a snap of the fingers, Sophie fell back into her dreamless slumber.

When she woke up again, someone was in her room. Thankfully, it was just Edaline, holding a tray full of custard bursts and looking very concerned. Without a word as to why, Sophie gently shook Iggy off her pillow and propped it up so she could sit up in her bed and snatch a custard burst.

"Are you ok?" A beat of silence followed before Sophie's response.

"Sure," Sophie answered with a mouthful of doughy goodness.

"Sophie, 'sure' is not an answer implying that you are ok."

Sophie said nothing and instead bear hugged her mom, custard burst still clutched in her hand. They sat like that for a while, until Edaline pulled back enough to see her face.

"Is this about what I may have saw as I was checking on the animals last night? With Fitz?"

Sophie didn't reply simply sobbing on her mom's baby blue tunic, soaking through the light material onto her pale shoulder.

"Have you though about talking to him?"

Sophie nodded her head against Edaline's tunic.

"Do you not want to talk to him?"

Sophie once again nodded her haed.

"I think you should talk to someone, it doesn't have to be Fitz, you know." Sophie sat there thinking of all the people she could talk to. Biana was always there for the drama, and would surely understand, but the risk of running into Fitz at Everglen or of him tagging along was too great of a risk. Linh would be nice, but what if she had a crush on Fitz? Sophie ruled out Linh. Marella had the same issue. Then the thought came to her. She could talk to Dex! He had surely gotten over her by now, right?

Sophie pulled away from Edaline, "I'm going to see Dex at Rimeshire. Is that ok?"

"Sure! Just be back before dinner."

"Thanks, Edaline."

Her mom smiled at her as she got up and went back downstairs. Sophie got up, closed the door, and leaned her back against it. She hoped this was a good idea. She walked across the room to her massive walk-in closet and started sifting through the hundreds of tunics sorted by color on hangers. She eventually settled on a sage green with little tassels at the bottom and the ends of the sleeves, which hit her elbows. She went through drawers and drawers of leggings until she found one with slim pockets at the ankles. She put on her favorite pair of knee high walnut boots, which were very well worn and had several pockets on the inside and outside. You can never have too many pockets.

She walked into her massive bathroom and washed off her face in one of the sparkling sinks. She brushed her hair out of its ponytail and tied the front parts back into a half up style, braiding the ends together.

Right as she was about to walk out, someone said, "Ooh, you look good!"

Sophie turned to see her spectral mirror and the tiny girl on it. "Thanks Vertina."

"Where are you going looking so pretty like that?"

"Just to Dex's house."

"Trying to impress him? Cause it's working." Vertina said wiggling her eyebrows.

"No! He's my cousin! I was just going to see him."

"Oh, alright. Tell me everything."

"About what?"

Vertina sighed and looked quite annoyed before answering. "Don't think I can't hear you just because you're out of range."

Sophie's cheeks turned a hue pinker as she quickly walked out of the bathroom and grabbed her Imparter. There were two new messages. Both were from Fitz.

Sophie?

I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to get all worked up like that. I was so surprised that I didn't think about how you were feeling. I feel awful. If you want to talk to me, just message me or come over to Everglen or whatever. I'm really really sorry.

Sophie seemed surprised that Fitz had even messaged her. She stuffed the imparter into a pocket in her leggings and ran upstairs to the Leapmaster.
