The next day

I walked side by side with Harry, Ron, and Hermione toward the Great Hall. The chatter bouncing off the stone walls was almost deafening. Everywhere I turned, students were whispering behind their hands, eyes flicking to me, then back to their friends with gasps and wide-eyed looks.

It was obvious they were all talking about what happened yesterday—about what Professor Snape did.

"Y/n," Hermione said quietly from beside me.

"Yeah? What's up?" I answered, glancing at her, trying to act casual even though my stomach was fluttering.

She exchanged a look with Ron before asking, "What was that yesterday?"

"Yeah, it looked like Snape was, I dunno... protecting you or something," Ron added, narrowing his eyes at me.

I shrugged, forcing a light tone into my voice. "I don't know what you two are on about."

Ron raised an eyebrow. "You don't think that was weird?"

I scoffed and turned my head away. "And why do you think I'm even talking to you right now, Ronald?"

Ron blinked. "Wha—hey, come on, Y/n. I was being stupid, alright? I shouldn't have messed with them like that. It was mean. I'm sorry."

I crossed my arms dramatically and pouted. "Oh, I don't accept your apology. How dare you do something so reckless without me?"

Ron stared at me, mouth half-open. "Wait... what?"

Hermione sighed, rubbing her temples. "Y/n, please. You already have detention. Do you really want to get into more trouble?"

I grinned. "If I'm going to serve time, I might as well make it worth it." But then I paused as I looked at Harry. He looked pale, distracted, like he wasn't really with us.

"Harry? You good?" I asked, frowning.

He startled. "What? Oh. Yeah—yeah, I'm good."

I tilted my head. "You don't look good. Hermione, look at him—he's hiding something."

Hermione put her book down and studied him. "Harry, do you need to go see Madam Pomfrey?"

"Actually..." He hesitated. "Yeah. Yeah, maybe I should."

I started to move toward him. "Alright, come on, we'll go with you—"

"No!" Harry said quickly, holding up a hand. "You guys should go on ahead. Ron can come with me."

Ron looked at him, concerned. "You sure, mate?"

"Yeah. It's nothing serious. I just... feel a bit off. Probably just tired."
