Two Young Hearts

Chapter 2

All I could think about for the rest of that night was the audition. They had told me that if I was getting a call back I would know by the end of the night. Lucas and I sat by my phone for hours with it, the ringer on loud so that we wouldn't miss the call, if I got it. I went into the kitchen to get food because it was ten o'clock at night and I had given up hope of getting the call back. When Lucas comes running in, I'm confused until he shoves my vibrating phone at me. I picked it up, and it was the company. I got the call back! It would be next weekend, and I would also be doing a chemistry read with someone who got a call back for Connor, who is Zoe's brother. I was so nervous that I ran to the bathroom and sat on the floor for a bit because I felt like I was going to throw up. 

With all the excitement of the call back I totally forgot that it was our last year of college and the first day was tomorrow! So the group and I planned to catch up in the courtyard and celebrate. Lucas and I went down and set up a picnic and then people started showing up. First came Ally, she ran up to me and gave me a big hug. Then Johnny came and he gave both Lucas and I a big hug, gave me a big jug of his homemade fruit punch that I got so excited about (I remembered it from when I stole some from him in the park) and put it straight into the cooler, and then he thanked Ally for his Christmas gift last year again for the fiftieth time. Next Zay came and he gave me a hug and I properly introduced him to Johnny and Ally. Then Tess came and she gave me a huge hug, and then I introduced her to Zay. Then Riley came and gave me a hug and I also introduced her to Zay. Then lastly Elle came and the way she carried herself now was so different to last year, I could tell she had been using the book that Evelyn gave her, so she hugged me and then politely introduced herself to Zay all on her own. 

Once everyone was there I grabbed a cup of the fruit punch out of the cooler and held it in the air, signaling I was going to make a toast. 

"Yo yo guys! Last year of college, what!" I yelled and everyone laughed and put their cups in the air as well, "We're graduating in the fall, what!"

"Fruit punch made by yours truly, what!" Johnny yelled, and we all clinked our cups in the middle before taking a drink of the punch.

The rest of the afternoon was full of laughing and drinking punch. We eventually got so sugar high off it that someone walking past would think that we were drunk. But I don't turn 21 until later on in the year so they were angels for me. Even though they were all 21 and could drink if they wanted to. The afternoon ended with us all agreeing that Johnny had to bring his punch to every group gathering. Then Lucas and I went back to the dorm and I fell asleep almost instantly. 

I woke up the morning of the callback and put the same outfit on that I wore for the first audition. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I went to the mirror and gave myself a bit of a pep talk. I can't get locked into my choices, I need to show the casting directors how "direct-able" I am. Then I went through the script and read all of Zoe's lines once more, even though I've had them memorized since day one. Directors usually ask what you think of the script at callbacks so I need to be ready for it. Then Lucas and I went to the audition hall. Once we were outside I took Lucas's hand and squeezed it with one hand and squeezed the dream catcher with the other, and then we went inside. There was only one girl in there (the girl that was giving me weird looks at the first audition) and someone already auditioning. The girl looked up at me and scoffed and went back to her magazine.

"Okay then lady, what crawled up your nose and died?" Lucas muttered under his breath and I had to stop myself from laughing.

Since she was the only girl in the room, I went up to introduce myself. 

"Nice to meet you!" I say.

"You're going down slut," she says, scoffing.

"Oh uhm, okay." I say, going and sitting down with Lucas.

We wait in the room and I hear whoever is in there doing a chemistry read with a male voice. I listened closely to the way he spoke and I noticed that I wouldn't even need to change my voice at all during the chemistry read, ours are so much alike. I just hope that's what they are looking for. I was looking around when I noticed that the girl was looking through her script and she looked very confused. I walked over to her to try once again to be nice to her. 

"Hey, are you okay? If you want we can run lines together, that might make it easier?" I ask her. 

"Get away nerd!" she says, shoving me a little bit.

"There's no need to shove me, jeez..." I say, going to walk away when she grabs me by the wrist. 

"What did you say to me, skank?" she asks.

"Aah, nothing!" I say, trying to pull my hand away as gently as possible. 

Lucas gives me the look he gives when I talk about my bully and I shake my head, I don't need to make enemies with people I could be potentially working with for months. After what felt like an hour the girl in the rehearsal room came out and it was Veronica, from the first audition! I was so happy that she got a callback, I ran up to her and hugged her and we promised to each other that when the cast list comes out we were going to text each other to meet and look at it together. Then it was my turn to do the chem read, and the girl in the waiting room scoffed. I walked into the room and a guy with pink hair was waiting in the room, next to the three casting directors. 

"Welcome back Maya, this is Julliard, he is one of the candidates who got a call back for Connor, as part of your callback you will be required to do a chemistry read with him," the middle casting director said, and Julliard winked at me.

Even though we had just met, it was like Veronica, we just instantly clicked. Right before we started Julliard came up behind me and whispered in my ear.

"Just so you know babe, I'll go easy on you because I like you, and I saw that guy you came in with, and I like him too," and just by that alone, I instantly relaxed, he was so obviously gay. 

I shoved him and he sighed because he got the hint he was my boyfriend and then we went into the chem read.

That girl that was being rude to Maya before wouldn't stop staring at me. 

"Take a picture, it lasts longer." I say.

"Excuse me burnout?" she says, and I couldn't help myself.

"Okay fine, keep staring, I might do a trick," I say, and she gets even more mad.

"I'm not staring at you bug-eyes," she says, but still won't stop.

"I'm sorry, but staring won't give you the power to see through my clothes," I say, trying my best not to laugh at the facial expressions she makes.

"I'm. Not. Staring. At. You. Loser." she says, and again, won't stop, and I again, can't help myself, she's just so stuck up.

"Yeah, soak it in, this is how good you could look too, if you got off your fat ass once in a while." I say, and just as I planned it makes her even more mad.

"You can talk lard-ass!" she says, quite loudly, and I'm just hoping the casting directors hear her.

I stop riling her up and scroll through my phone but I could feel her eyes burning into my forehead.

"Alright lady, stop staring, you can't afford me," I say before moving away.

"I could afford you if I wanted to, freak!" she screams after me and as soon as I'm out of ears reach I burst out laughing. 

I waited until I heard the doors open and then I went back to the waiting room to meet Maya, and that darn girl started staring again.

I added Veronica and Julliard to a group chat on the way home and we planned where we were going to meet when the cast list goes up. We were all so excited for the day to finally come. And luckily they were also fine with Lucas tagging along.
