More than two decades ago...
"What do you mean you want to marry an unknown girl?" Prime Minister Yao was right in front of his son but he seemed to still be looking down from up above.
"She is not unknown, Father." Liheng, at the cusp of his youth, was the most charming gentleman in the capital.
"That girl came from a family of lowly soldiers!" The Prime Minister knocked a cup of tea in anger, not minding that his son would be scalded.
There were only two of them in the study so his father was able to let go of his temper like this.
Prime Minister Yao took a few breaths to have some semblance of calm. "You can take her as a concubine-"
"No, Father. I can only take her as my wife. My only wife."
Yao Liheng had made up his mind. He would marry Ling Ling. Not only out of responsibility, but out of love.
"That's why I'm asking you... to take my name out of the family registry if you oppose this marriage. I won't fight for my right as your first-born. I will quietly leave so I won't disgrace the family. Father, just please... allow me to be with her." His voice was shaking.
This was his first heartfelt confession to his father, the Prime Minister of the nation. He knew how much this man expected of his first-born son but here he was saying that he would let all of those down.
The Prime Minister looked at him with hawk-like eyes but he didn't cower. He was the person who taught him never to let anyone see his weakness.
Even if his flesh was trembling, his heart was of steel.
Who knew how long he waited until Prime Minister Yao sighed. "If this is what you wish, then go."
Liheng's eyes grew wide. He never expected his father to agree so easily.
He kowtowed in gratitude. "Farewell, take good care of your health."
As he slid the door open, a little girl smiled at him. "Uncle! Are you leaving?"
Carrying the girl, he could see that her front teeth were missing. "Yes, Cheng'er. You might not see Uncle for a long time."
Little Yao Ducheng grew sad and tears started dripping down her chubby cheeks. "But Uncle... Cheng'er will miss you."
"Don't worry, my dear. Sometimes, we have to chase our happiness. And when you find what makes you happy, don't let go."
Liheng felt like he was walking on air. After bidding the little girl goodbye, he only carried his essentials. He didn't want to bring things that were given to the eldest young master of the Yao family.
Starting from this moment, he was just Liheng.
Climbing the horse he rented, he dashed off to where he would meet his beloved.
She said her father wouldn't agree to their marriage but she sought her brother's help so they could elope. They could live in the mountain of Bing. He could teach village children and help farming for a living and she could hunt.
Yao Liheng laughed to himself. That was a rather odd arrangement. But he couldn't help but lovingly agree.
"Ling Ling, wait for me." He whispered to the wind. His breaths fogged in front of him.
People watched a dashing man with a delightful smile. Ladies couldn't help but take a second glance.
"Woah, woah," he urged the horse to slow down as he neared the forest.
