This request was by @Cookin_wth_Chang_e, who wanted to see Macaque comfort a sad Wukong after getting out of the memory scroll.
Includes Shadowpeach + Spoilers for season 4 (although if you haven't seen that yet then what the heck is wrong with you and why are you waiting so long?)
Everything was over now, Azure was dead, his power was sealed by Nezha, and everything was fine. It was.
...So why did it still hurt so much?
Why, when everyone had left the beach and MK had hugged him goodbye, could he feel his heart sink in his chest, the smile pulled over his face finally dropping the same way his tail dropped behind him, his heart aching with memories?
"Should have known you were just waiting for everyone to leave before you could mope." A voice he recognized surprised him, and he spun around to find Macaque in a tree, leaning against the trunk with one leg dangling down.
In his hand was a peach, and Wukong rolled his eyes but didn't bother pretending to be okay again.
"I thought you'd left already." He jabbed instead, staring up at the other primate as his tail thumped on the ground impatiently, covering up the embarrassment at being caught off guard.
Macaque looked at him, those knowing eyes making Wukong shift uncomfortably before shrugging casually and taking a bite from his fruit.
"Eh, you know me, I always show up where I'm not wanted." He quipped, and before it wouldn't have bothered him, but the recent nonconsensual reminiscing had left his mind stuck on the past, so listening to Macaque talk like that made him ache.
"Don't say that." He almost snapped, frustration growing at the way Macaque only raised an eyebrow at him incredulously, slow and composed as he took another bite of his peach, leaving Wukong to wait as he chewed and then swallowed before replying.
"Really? Why not?" For such a long pause, the reply hadn't been worth the wait and Wukong sighed loudly.
"It's true after all," Macaque added dismissively and Wukong snapped his gaze back up with wide eyes, mouth hanging open in surprise.
"What? That- that isn't true." How could his oldest friend ever- He stopped the thought, something sour sitting in his gut as he realized he knew exactly why his friend thought Wukong didn't want him around.
"Sure it is."
He'd told him so, after all.
Told him he never wanted to see his face again under that mountain and yelled at him as he'd left when Macaque had just been there as a friend. In the scroll, Wukong had had plenty of time to re-watch that moment, cataloging the second he pushed his best friend away and had been cruel, starting the cracks in their relationship that had led to the disastrous consequences of them falling apart.
If only Wukong had said something different then, had reacted differently, maybe then anger and hatred wouldn't have festered in both their hearts, maybe then Macaque wouldn't have done what he'd done, and Wukong wouldn't have struck him down.
Maybe, they could have made up again.
Everything Wukong did was wrong, all his choices had led to this, to Macaque's scar, and he was just so tired. He'd lived so long, done so much wrong. How could Macaque even stand to even talk to him?
He deserved to sit in the scroll reliving it all, it was penance for all his mistakes. Why had he let MK try to convince him otherwise?
"Uh... Wukong? You okay there?" Macaque was now leaning forward on the branch, watching him with ever-observant and clever eyes and Wukong quickly nodded, pulling that fake smile that fooled everyone onto his face.
