So I was asked to do a second part to 'Staying' (where Wukong leaves the group during JTTW and doesn't go back) so maybe re-read that if you have no idea what I'm talking about.
Wukong wasn't sure what would have happened if he'd decided to go back, but he didn't much care. He liked the way things were now, and sure, he could have made a huge mistake, but it was hard to feel that way when his people were all so excited and thriving with him back, and Macaque was by his side.
He was glad they'd made up even though things were still rocky between them, but Wukong had been so relieved to find him alive that the argument under the mountain felt inconsequential now, and he'd already forgiven Macaque for what he'd said.
It still hurt a little, but Wukong was determined to prove him wrong. He wasn't obsessive, although Macaque had been right about his pursuit of power. It never ended, and he was ashamed that it took him so long to realize this.
He thought the journey would make him better. That the only way to enlightenment was that path but now he figured there was a better way to change and learn, and it started with looking inward and listening to Macaque when he told him he was going too far.
The years passed, and things got better. His mountain was thriving and his relationship with Macaque was only improving. It seemed that he was less insecure that Wukong was going to leave again, and was less hesitant to get close to him. It was a good feeling, and Wukong found his heart fluttering whenever Macaque looked at him with those soft eyes of his.
When Macaque was next to him, looking at him with those beautiful eyes and pretty ears, Wukong was so, so glad he'd stayed. He couldn't imagine a world without his moon. Eventually, casual touches became more, and they found themselves cuddling and linking tails whenever they could. It was good. It was nice. It reminded him of how close they'd been as kids. Wukong hadn't felt this close to someone in years. They never talked about what they were, but one night when Wukong was staring at his pretty face he decided to ask.
"Be my queen?" He asked bluntly and suddenly, ever so soft and smiling at the flustered look on his moon's face.
"Wha- Wukong!" He stammered, but when Wukong knew what he wanted, he wasn't shy about asking.
"I mean, you basically are already, you rule with me, and I love you. I said I'd stay by your side and I have, haven't I? I want to be with you forever." Macaque's whole face lit up a gorgeous red, and he ducked so that his face was buried in Wukong's chest, probably so he couldn't see his flustered state.
He looked back up again pretty quickly though, his six ears fluttering.
"Promise you won't leave again? If you say forever, you have to mean it. I don't want you to go." He said and Wukong nodded, placing his hand on his moon's cheek.
"I promise. I mean it this time. You trust me, don't you?" He asked and Macaque snorted, ducking his head again and linking their hands together.
"Yeah, I suppose I do."
True to his word, hundreds of years passed and they were still together. The Pilgrims group had finished their journey with the help of Gwanyin a long, long time ago, and all of them had long since died. News which Macaque had been the one to notify Wukong of, using his ears to listen to gossip and the ongoings of the world outside their safe haven.
Wukong wasn't sure what to feel but found himself reaching up to touch the circlet on his head, still there since heaven didn't trust him. It weighed on his mind like a brick and every now and then he'd get migraines from the phantom pain in his skull.
