The restaurant was bustling with activity as Niall and his friends, Liam, Louis, and Harry, walked in. They found a table and settled down, chatting and laughing together. Zayn, their waitress, approached their table with a warm smile.
"Hi, I'm Zayn, and I'll be your waitress today. Should we start with some drinks or...?" Zayn began, but Liam interrupted.
"I think we're ready to order," Liam said, glancing at his friends for confirmation.
Zayn nodded, taking out his pen and notepad. Niall spoke up, his voice a bit hesitant. "Um, can I have pasketti and ap'a juice?"
"Spaghetti and apple juice?" Liam repeated, seeking clarification. Niall blushed and mumbled, "Y-yea..."
"All good," Zayn responded, trying to ease any discomfort. He patted Niall on the shoulder, but Niall flinched away.
"Don't touch me!" Niall exclaimed, his voice filled with distress. Liam and the others immediately came to Niall's defense. "Yea, get your hands off him!" Louis said, his tone protective. "He doesn't like it!"
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't realize, I-I won't do it again," Zayn stammered, feeling overwhelmed by the sudden confrontation. The boys scoffed, not fully satisfied with the apology. Zayn's eyes welled with tears as he dropped the pen and notepad, clutching his chest. A panic attack was taking hold.
"I-I'm sorry..." Zayn mumbled again, his voice trembling. The guilt and anxiety were overwhelming him.
But amidst the tense situation, Niall's instincts kicked in. He could see that Zayn was struggling, and he couldn't bear to see someone else in pain. He jumped up from his seat and, being the closest to Zayn, went over to hug him.
The unexpected gesture snapped Zayn out of his panic attack. He quickly gathered himself and lightly hugged Niall back. Sensing Niall's need for comfort, Zayn adjusted his approach. He slightly released from the hug, then went down to Niall's height, hugging him tighter and rubbing his back gently. Niall's body gradually stopped shaking with sobs.
"That's it, you're alright, shh, you're alright, no need for tears," Zayn whispered soothingly.
Niall slowly released from the hug, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "S-sorry," he mumbled, looking at Zayn's name tag. "Z-Z-Zan?"
Zayn chuckled softly. "It's Zayn."
"Thank you, Zayn. You're like my brother," Niall said, a grateful smile on his face.
Zayn smiled back, touched by the connection. "How did you do that?" Liam asked, surprise evident in his voice.
"My brother's autistic, and... I..." Zayn choked on his words, struggling to explain. "Is this little fella on the spectrum...?"
"Y-yeah, he is," Louis replied quietly, realizing the significance of the situation.
Zayn turned his attention back to Niall, his curiosity piqued. "Listen, Zayn, we're really sorry for yelling at ya. We... it was really wrong," Louis apologized, his voice sincere.
"I'm sorry too," Niall added, his voice filled with remorse.
Zayn nodded, accepting their apologies. He reached out his arm to touch Niall's shoulder but quickly retracted it, remembering Niall's sensitivity to touch. He scratched the back of his head, feeling a mixture of emotions.
"Yeah, it'-its alright," Zayn reassured them.
Niall hesitated for a moment, then spoke again. "You can touch... I just didn't like it because I didn't know you were going to do it and... yeah."
There was a pause.
Suddenly, Niall broke the silence. "Can I have your number!?" he blurted out, a hopeful expression on his face.
Zayn's smile widened. "Sure."
"I-I'm not good with text, though..." Niall mumbled, a hint of worry in his voice.
"No worries," Zayn assured him, understanding Niall's communication preferences.
Niall beamed at him. "Thanks... D-d-did you have a panic attack when friends yelled at you...?"
Zayn's face turned a deep shade of red, and he looked down, noticing his hands trembling. "Y-yeah... I-I get them pretty often, and I don't know how to deal with them..."
"How often?" Niall asked, his concern evident.
Zayn hesitated, but he realized that Niall genuinely wanted to help. "At least once a day, more when I'm stressed..." Zayn admitted, his voice filled with vulnerability.
Niall's empathy shone through as he offered his support. "Call me when you have one, and I will try to help, o-or text me... if you want," Niall said, his voice filled with genuine care.
Zayn's smile returned, touched by Niall's offer. "Thanks, I will."
The atmosphere at the table had shifted. The initial tension and misunderstanding had transformed into a shared understanding and compassion. Niall, Liam, Louis, and Harry had learned a valuable lesson about acceptance and respecting personal boundaries, while Zayn had discovered a newfound connection and support in Niall.
As the group continued with their meal, the rest of their time at the restaurant was filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and a newfound bond between Niall and Zayn. They realized that despite their differences, they could learn from one another and support each other in meaningful ways.
In that moment, the restaurant became more than just a place to eat—it became a space where understanding, acceptance, and friendship flourished. And as they left the restaurant with smiles on their faces, they carried with them the lessons they had learned, ready to apply them in their lives beyond that moment.
