HELLO ASIA! INTERVIEW: RAP MONSTER (SOUTH KOREA) FROM BTS TALKS ABOUT WORKING WITH WARREN G & BTS COMEBACK

Hello Asia! editor Johnny Au chats exclusively to K-Pop star and leader of hit boy group BTS- Rap Monster. Rap Monster recently released a collaboration with famed US rapper and Hip Hop producer Warren G. Rap Monster talks about the track P.D.D - Please Don't Die, the highlights of working with Warren G, his band members reaction to the track and BTS comeback for this year.

Rap Monster congratulations on the track P.D.D - Please Don't Die and your collaboration with Warren G. Can you tell us how the collaboration began?

Last year, I met Warren G while filming an M.net reality program. There was a mission where I had to write new lyrics to Warren G's signature song Regulate, and he gave me a very good evaluation at the time. He said that he wanted to write a beat for me, and that became the start of the collaboration. For 6 months, we worked back and forth via email, and at the end of February, I went to the US to put the finishing touches on the track.

What is the difference in working with a US producer compared to a Korean producer?

Honestly, I didn't feel a big difference. But, Warren G is a legend of American hip hop, and he was the pioneer of G-funk. It was a huge honor to record in front of him and make adjustments to the track together.

Reflecting on the lyrics for P.D.D can you tell us the meanings behind the words?

'P.D.D' means Please Don't Die. It's a message for the people who looked down on me. I'm telling them not to die until they see me prove myself with my own skills.

What has been the best part of working with Warren G?

There's no way I can only choose one aspect. Just the fact that I got the chance to work with someone like Warren G was amazing. I was happy that I could put my own rap on top of a track that Warren G, himself, wrote. And Warren G believed in me, from start to finish.

Have the other members of BTS heard P.D.D yet? Have you received any reactions from them?

Of course, all of the members have heard the track. I got a lot of strength from my members' support. Honestly, I felt bad that I was working with Warren G on my own, but the members were the ones who told me not to feel that way. After the track was released, the members even wrote encouraging messages on Twitter, and they've been giving me support.

Any chance you will perform the song live with Warren G?

A live performance with him would be like a dream. Warren G and I never talked about performing this song, but if he calls for me, I would be willing to fly to any country in the world.

Are there any other artists from Western music you would like to work with?

There are so many that I can't count them all. I'm the type who isn't picky about music- I listen to everything. That way, I can diversify the types of genres that I, myself, can pull off. I want to work with artists that stand out from every genre, and all of the musicians that I like.

What's next for you this year? When will we see a BTS comeback?

First off, we have a concert in Taiwan this weekend (March 9th), and on March 28-29, we have our concert in Korea. We have consecutive concerts. We haven't set an exact date for our comeback yet. If the members write tracks quickly, we can come back sooner, and if they take a little longer to write tracks, we will come back a little later. It all depends on us.

Will we be able to see you in Australia?

I hope so. We haven't been to Australia yet. Hopefully we can go soon.

What is the scariest monster to you, Rap Monster?

There is a drink called 'Monster' in Korea, so probably that?
