Chapter 10

[ POV OF LAN XICHEN ]

Lan Xichen was walking slowly.

Was I alright?

Did he think I was weird?

Would he want to see me again?

Would he ever want to talk to me again?

He wouldn't stop being friends with me right?

Why did he have to leave?...

I want to see him again...

He was still thinking about that certain merguy when a disciple rushed to him. His face dropped and became tense when he realized what he was informed of. 

"Thank you for telling me. I shall go see Uncle right away."

He hurriedly walked away, not seeing the disciple smile unpleasantly after him.

[ WITH JIANG CHENG ]

Jiang Cheng was sitting silently at the dining table. Everyone was tense as Mandam Yu appeared and sat herself down. No one dared to look her in the eye after that event with Zidian. Jiang Fengmian gave his wife a nervous glance.

He coughed, which earned himself some alarmed stares, some curious stares, and a certain glare (This was normal). His expression became more serious as he spoke. "Your mother and I have recieved a new report last night." 

Jiang Cheng was relieved for a moment, as he visited Lan Xichen early morning, which meant they weren't found out- 

Yet.

"We have recieved news of more...concerning activities from the surface." 

Jiang Cheng turned his head sharply to look at Wei Wuxian, who looked equally alarmed. Both seemed to be thinking the same thing. 

Could they have...

Jiang Fengmian who had seen the two boys share an alarmed look, started to become suspicious. "Jiang Cheng... Wei Ying... do you two know something?" 

Jiang Cheng gulped. He had two options: Come clean and admit of his interaction with humans, or make up a lie. He glanced at Wei Wuxian who suddenly gave him a 'reassured' look.

"Father, Madam Yu" Wei Wuxian's voice shook slightly, but Madam Yu seemed to not notice.

"Me and Jiang Cheng have no information on what you just said. However, while searching for seashells, we found an arrow that fell into the lake lately. We have been really curious, and so we just thought that the incidents may have been... connected." Jiang Cheng knew that Wei Wuxian was willing to do anything to keep a loved one safe. He noticed how Wei Wuxian did not mention anything about directly seeing anyone while finding the arrow.

Jiang Fengmian looked convinced and relieved, while Madam Yu looked the opposite. She had... an interesting expression.

"Jiang Cheng. Is this true?" 

Madam Yu was staring intently at Jiang Cheng, as if she knew of the lie Wei Wuxian said. Jiang Cheng gulped. He was about to confess when something in him reminded him of the possible danger for a certain Lan he'd been meeting.

If I confess, Mother may ban me from meeting A-Huan...

She might even do something to his Sect! I can't let that happen!...

Wei Wuxian seemed to notice his expression and was about to speak for him when Jiang Cheng cut him off.

"Yes. Yes it's true."

Wei Wuxian gave him a surprised stare, as he wasn't expecting Jiang Cheng to lie to his mother. Jiang Cheng never lied to Madam Yu. He wouldn't dare to. And now that he had...

Madam Yu seemed stared at Jiang Cheng, making him even more nervous. Though Jiang Yanli didn't know what was happening, she seemed to have caught on that something was more at play and stared worriedly at Jiang Cheng. Jiang Fengmian closed his eyes.

"Well, your mother and I, are glad you two are not involved. However, we have... discussed this issue, and have come to the conclusion that we must increase our training hours and increase our knowledge in defense and offense. We must be prepared at all costs."

Jiang Cheng frowned. 

"Father... why prepare?"

Wei Wuxian paled as he realized what Jiang Fengmian meant.

"Jiang Cheng... I am sorry for bringing you into this, but if our suspicions are correct, we must start getting ready."

Jiang Cheng was still confused.

"Prepare for what?"

"Jiang Cheng..." Wei Wuxian tried.

Madam Yu snorted. 

"Fengmian look what you raised. Even this son of a servant has realized what you meant! Jiang Cheng, surely you understand what we mean."

Jiang Cheng couldn't understand.

Jiang Fengmian opened his eyes and looked directly at Jiang Cheng.

"Jiang Cheng. We are going to war."
