Chapter 17

[ No one's pov- ]

It was early afternoon, when Jiang Cheng, Lan Xichen, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were outside, eating snacks and talking. Jiang Cheng had begun to feel annoyed, at how lovey dovey Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were, and would have lost his patience-

If it weren't for Lan Xichen.

It was a normal day really, with merkids swimming around, play-fighting, enjoying themselves- really, no one expected for this day to take a wild turn.

Wei Wuxian was talking loudly about how merpups were better than merkits, when suddenly, a loud gong was heard. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian visibly paled, making Lan Xichen and Lan wangji worried. "What's wrong?" Lan Xichen hurridly asked Jiang Cheng. 

"We're under attack." Jiang Cheng exhaled. "By who though? The Nie Sect is allied with us, and the Jin Sect is too allied with us. There is no one else to be enemies with-" Lan Xichen sucked in a breath, and Lan Wangji clenched his fists. "Lan Zhan? What's wrong?" Wei Wuxian asked worriedly. Jiang Cheng scowled. "Wei Wuxian we don't have time to ask questions, we have to go back, now." Wei Wuxian nodded determinedly, and they both turn to go back, as Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji exchange a knowing glance before following them.

Back at their home, everyone was in panic. Guards were summoned in great amounts, and Yu Ziyuan was snapping at everyone. The ones who could not fight were to evacuate and take the secret tunnel to the Jin or Nie Sect. The ones who could fight, were to remain and defend the lake. Then, Yu Ziyuan turned to Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian. "You. Wei Wuxian." Wei Wuxian looked at her in surprise and confusion since she had never called him by his real name at all. "Take care of Jiang Cheng. Do not worry about your sister. A-Li is already at the Jin Sect with Zixuan. Wei Wuxian, you better take care of Jiang Cheng, do you hear me?!" Her voice was raised, but to Jiang Cheng's surprise, her voice trembled a little, as she looked at them both. "Make sure you get away safely. After all, someone will need to inherit the Sect when I die." Jiang Cheng quivered, a tear falling from his face. "A-Niang, what are you saying?! You'll go with us, right?!" For the first time in a long time, Yu Ziyuan gave her son a small smile, as she hugged Jiang Cheng. "I will. In your heart, I will." Then she pulled Wei Wuxian to her, and hugged him as well, catching both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian off guard. "You two better not fight in the future. Our Sect needs you both." She exhaled. Then she sent older disciples to take them to the secret tunnel, ignoring their shouts of protest. 

When the older disciples got to the front of the tunnel, the bowed and excused themselves as they were ordered to fight for the Jiang Sect, leaving Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. Suddenly Wei Wuxian spoke up, "hey, where's Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen?" Jiang Cheng sucked in a breath, realizing too that Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen were nowhere to be found. Wei Wuxian grimaced, and motioned for Jiang Cheng to follow him back to the Sect. However, just as the begin to swim away, Jiang Cheng felt something move in his pocket. Frowning, he called Wei Wuxian back to tell him, and he slipped his hands into the pocket of his robes to see what was in his robes. He pulled out his hand.

Zidian glimmered with a faint glow of purple, as lightning sparked.

His Mother was without Zidian.
