THE NEXT DAY, the Mardi's Club needed extensive cleaning when last night's drunken and whoring soiree left most of things here broken and messy.

I helped the girls clean around; Rose and I were assigned in the garden, wiping the tables from spilled liquor and cigarette ashes, sweeping the stone floor and the made-up stage at the center, and watering the plants growing around the place.

A mailman then entered the premises, accompanied by few of the girls - excitedly squirming. "She's here! She's here!" They gushed, and pushed the mailman toward me.

I gave them a weird look. "Uh, what's happening?"

"The girls don't usually receive mails. But you got one!" Tulip exclaimed, clapping and jumping. "It's from mister Lioncourt!"

Her friends giggled at the mention of the name. He had only been here once, but his charming reputation made him instantly well-known over the club. It made sense. The way he brought himself, the way he talked, the way he looked at people, the way he looked, made him hard to forget. It seemed like only death could make them forget him.

But it wasn't really a mail like what she said; the mailman gave me a tiny package. I brought it on a table, and as I unwrapped it, Tulip and her friends gathered around me. It was a small box, and attached on its lid was a letter. I read first the content of the letter, and I saw again his beautiful cursive penmanship.

"Accept it, ma cherie, I'll have it no other way."

I frowned in confusion and at the same time - in suspicion. I then opened the box, and it revealed the ruby earrings which he caught me staring at the jewelry store last night.

The girls squirmed again seeing Lestat's gift to me. Others gave their compliments, some expressed envy.

"You're such a lucky girl!"

"Fuck, I hope I find a rich European too."

"I wish my men could give me presents like that instead of just their dicks."

"Mister Lioncourt is such a sugar daddy."

I held the earrings close to me, and they glistened in my hand under the soft rays of the sun. I glanced over at Rose near the stage, holding a broom, but she wasn't sweeping anymore... just glaring at me. I tried to approach her, but she threw the broom away and hurriedly exited the garden.

Did I like the gift? Absolutely. Did I like how it caused problem between Rose and I? Absolutely not. But I just couldn't throw these rubies away or lock them away or give them away. Lestat had been very kind and friendly to me. I did not want to appear ungrateful to him.

"Mon amie! Let me put it on you!" Tulip said eagerly with her beaming smile. I nodded in permission, and once the rubies were dangling on my ears, the girls stared at me with awe in their eyes. "Magnifique!"
