BACK ON MY TABLE, I pretended to sip tea without a care in the world once Zacharias and Lorelèi returned.
The cousins huddled close with each other at the back corner of the balcony, with a face that brewed a scheme. I tried to look into their minds, but there's something blocking me. It was as if a curtain covered their subconscious, and I couldn't lift it open somehow. Shit. This was dangerous. I had no clue what they're up to.
Seeing me, Zacharias left his cousin then went to my table. He sat next to me, and I tensed up. "Sorry about Loreléi." He said. "She tends to throw a fit sometimes."
I forced myself to innocently smile. "No, it's okay. I shouldn't have teased her."
"Yeah, she can be intense sometimes." Then he leaned in to jokingly whisper. "She's actually the cuckoo of the family."
I wasn't sure if he were baiting me, so I didn't know whether to laugh or not. I just sipped my tea.
"Anyway, I'm really sorry for the inconvenience."
I tried to smile again. "Like I told you, it's okay."
"Zach." Loreléi called, then she beckoned him near the buffet table.
Zacharias got up. "Excuse me."
I nodded, then watched him get to his cousin. They turned their backs on me as they pretended to pick some food on the buffet table, talking silently as they did so. I might not know what's going on in their heads, but I still had the power of heightened hearing.
"What in the heavens are you doing?!" Loreléi angrily whispered. "I told you to get rid of her and not apologize!"
"Your visions are always open to interpretation, Ley. And you've always been a drama queen."
"So you're saying that I might have relayed my visions wrong?!" She sounded insulted.
"Well," Zacharias shrugged. "It happened before."
I couldn't see her face, but I knew Loreléi was fuming red in indignation. "Don't say I didn't warn you, cousin." Then she roughly bumped Zacharias on his shoulder as she walked away.
Zacharias turned around, and his eyes met mine. He tried to smile, acting like nothing happened. I smiled back, acting the same.
