OUT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, the air was crisp and cool, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine and the sound of crickets chirping in the distance. Zacharias and I strolled leisurely, taking in the sights and tranquil sounds of the night, while we laughed in amusement how we were able to escape unseen by the gossip vultures lingering around the mayor's abode.

As we walked, I couldn't help but notice the way the streetlights reflected off Zacharias' piercing light brown eyes, casting a warm glow on his face. I felt my breath hitch when he smiled at me, his dimples deepening with each step we took.

"Why are you smiling?" I asked.

He shrugged nonchalantly. "Nothing."

"You're an awful liar." I playfully pushed him off with my elbow. "It's not nothing."

"We've been walking quite a while now. Aren't you going to tell me where your house is?" His lips curved up, and he was smiling again. "Or are you just stalling with me?"

"Alright. You got me." I stopped him from walking, then pulled him close as I put my arms around his shoulders. "I don't intend on going home." I could hear his veins pumping, his heart gently beating, and his calm breathing. I could tell that he's not afraid on women getting this close to him. Well, there's my failed attempt on making him blush.

Zacharias gently removed my arms from him, and just like a prude gentleman, he kept his distance two steps away. "You have to go home, miss Tala, or your family will be worried."

"I don't have a family here." I admitted; but then followed up a lie. "I'm only with my cousin."

"Your cousin might still get worried."

"I don't think he will. He's still back in the party."

"Why'd you leave him?"

"We had a fight. And I'm thinking of moving out. Our disagreement makes me annoyed to live with him."

"And you're planning to move out right now?" Once he saw me nodding, he chuckled unbelievably. "Where would you go at this late hour?"

I rubbed my neck, looking at him apologetically. "I'm thinking that you could help me."

"Is this why you left with me?"

"Uh...yes?"

"Unbelievable."

"BUT also because I think you're an interesting person to spend some time with." Then I batted my eyelashes as I put my hand on his chest. "Will you help me now?"

Zacharias chuckled and shook his head. "You are unbelievable, miss Tala. But fine. Alright."

My lips grew wide from grinning. Then with a couple of excited childish jumps, I thanked him.

AS WE ARRIVED at the edge of the street, a chill crawled up my spine, yet my blood raced with anticipation. The flickering streetlights casted long shadows, obscuring the path that led to the mysterious manor house nestled amidst the darkness. Its grandeur was irresistible, emanating an enchanting allure that beckoned us closer.
