In the quiet darkness of the night, Charlotte stirred in her sleep, her brow furrowing as an unexpected pain jolted her awake. She winced and shifted uncomfortably, trying to make sense of the sharp ache that seemed to radiate from her abdomen. Her heart raced as she realized something was wrong.
Next to her, Engfa lay peacefully, lost in her dreams. But Charlotte's pain was too intense to ignore. She reached out and gently shook Engfa's shoulder.
"P'Fa..." she whispered urgently. "P'Fa... Wake up."
Engfa stirred, blinking her eyes open and squinting in the dim light of their bedroom.
"Char? What's wrong?" she asked, her voice heavy with sleep.
Charlotte's face was contorted with pain.
"Something's not right, P'Fa... It hurts." She managed to say through gritted teeth.
Engfa's concern grew as she saw the distress etched on Charlotte's face. She quickly sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, and turned on the bedside lamp. She turned to Charlotte to see how she could help.
"What do you need? How can I help?"
"I want to go to the bathroom."
Engfa nodded and quickly ran to Charlotte's side to help her up. She reached out for the blanket and lifted it up, revealing the alarming sight of blood. Engfa gasped. Charlotte's breath hitched. The room seemed to spin as their minds raced to comprehend what was happening.
Charlotte's gaze met Engfa's, and in that moment, the fear they both felt was mirrored in each other's eyes. Engfa's heart pounded loudly in her chest.
"I'll call the ambulance." She said, her voice shaking.
Without waiting for a response, Engfa fumbled for her phone on the nightstand and dialed the emergency number. Her fingers trembled as she gave the operator their address and explained the situation. She hung up, her hands shaking uncontrollably. Engfa let out a breath, before turning to Charlotte.
She reached out and gently held Charlotte's hand.
"Hang in there, baby. Help is coming."
"P'Fa..."
"Shhh. It's okay."
Tears welled up in Charlotte's eyes as she squeezed Engfa's hand. The pain was overwhelming, and the sight of blood had sent her mind into a whirlwind of fear and uncertainty. As they waited for the ambulance, Engfa did her best to keep Charlotte calm, offering soothing and gentle touches. The minutes felt like an eternity, but finally the distant wail of sirens pierced the night. Engfa's heart leaped in relief as she rushed to the window, watching as the ambulance pulled up to their home.
The paramedics quickly took charge, their professionalism and care a welcome sight. Engfa stood by Charlotte's side, holding her hand as they were guided through the process. As Charlotte was wheeled out of the room, Engfa grabbed their coats, her phone, and keys and followed the ambulance to the hospital. Before that, casting one last glance at their bedroom, the blood that stained the bed. Engfa's tears welled up before rushing after Charlotte.
Engfa's heart raced as she sat next to Charlotte in the sterile examination room, their hands tightly clasped. The air felt heavy with tension, and every tick of the clock seemed to stretch time. Charlotte's eyes were red and puffy from crying, and Engfa's expression was a mix of worry and empathy.
Dr. Tanarak, their obstetrician, entered the room with a gentle smile, but her eyes held a seriousness that instantly caused Engfa's stomach to tighten.
"Engfa, Charlotte," she began softly, her voice filled with compassion, "I've carefully reviewed the ultrasound results, and I'm afraid I have some difficult news to share."
Charlotte's breath caught, and she leaned closer to Engfa, seeking comfort in her presence. Engfa tightened her grip on Charlotte's hand, offering silent support.
Dr. Tanarak continued, her voice steady but kind, "Based on the ultrasound findings, it appears that the pregnancy has not developed as it should. I'm so sorry... It seems that you've experienced a miscarriage."
Tears welled up in Charlotte's eyes, "No... No... What did I do wrong?" Her voice trembled as she spoke.
Engfa squeezed Charlotte's hand gently, offering her silent support, as Dr. Tanarak's eyes met Charlotte's with kindness.
"Charlotte, I want you to understand that miscarriages are usually caused by anything you did or didn't do. There is no way to know for sure. You did nothing wrong. Miscarriages are complex. They happen for a variety of reasons that are not related to what you did or didn't do."
Charlotte wiped her tears with the back of her hand, her voice softening.
"I just... I just wish I could've protected Niran better."
The couple had talked about baby names the moment they had the confirmation that Charlotte was pregnant. They decided on Niran, which meant eternal and forever. The name carries a sense of timeless love, just like their love after everything that they had gone through to be a couple.
Engfa cleared her throat, trying to keep her emotions in check, for Charlotte's sake.
"What... What happens next?" Engfa asked.
The doctor's tone remained gentle as she explained the options, her words a lifeline amid the turmoil.
"Given that you were at 4 months, we can either discuss a D&C procedure to remove the remaining tissue or a medication to help your body complete the process naturally. It's important that you choose an option that feels right for you both."
Charlotte looked at Engfa, for a decision.
"What's a D&C?" Engfa enquired.
Dr. Tanarak's gaze shifted to Engfa, her expression understanding.
"D&C stands for dilation and curettage. It's a medical procedure often performed to remove tissue from the uterus. In this case, it would involve removing any remaining pregnancy tissue to help prevent infection and promote healing."
Engfa nodded, absorbing the information, and then turned her attention back to Charlotte.
"Is it dangerous?"
Dr. Tanarak shook her head gently.
"No. It's a common and generally safe procedure. However, as with any medical intervention, there are risks and potential complications. We'll discuss those risks with you and take all necessary precautions to ensure your safety."
Engfa turned to Charlotte, and caressed her head.
"What do you want to do, Char?"
Charlotte bit her lip, "I... I think I'd like to do the procedure. I want this to be over."
Dr. Tanarak nodded understandingly, before discussing the details of the procedure and what to expect afterward. As she was listening to Dr. Tanarak's explanation, she occasionally glanced at Charlotte. Her heart sank, seeing the pain on her wife's face. She wiped the tears escaping Charlotte's eyes, before continuing rubbing Charlotte's head gently. She was determined to let Charlotte know that it was not her fault and that she was there to pick up the pieces of her heart.

A/N: Uh-oh. I feel like I always write angst. Do I? Who enjoys angst, comment down below! A lot of research went into this chapter! I've always wanted to write about rainbow babies because I don't know, they give a different kind of heartbreak. I've never went through it but my heart hurts for the mothers who did.
Once again, comments are greatly appreciated and upvotes!
