I woke up groggy as my vision began to focus. I looked up and seen a white ceiling. The sound of beeping got my attention. I soon realized that I was hooked up to an IV bag and a heart monitor. I looked down and seen that my mother was slumped over sleeping on a chair at the foot side of my bed.
At the far end of the room, someone was sitting in the chair resting. It was my Mateo. I slowly got up trying not to wake my mother, but she was already awaken.
"Oh my god, Mia." she said as she came to my aid, helping me sit up.
"Mamma.." I called out to her as I cried and hugged her.
"La mia dolce Bambina." She said as she stroked my hair, hugging me with tears in her eyes. She kissed my head multiple times and hugged my ever so tight. Mateo was already awake and stood by the edge of my bed.
She wiped her tears and smiled looking at me and Mateo. "I'll go grab the doctor and your father." She said.
Before she stepped out, she stopped by Mateo and cupped his face with a smile and left. I looked at Mateo as he made his way around the side of my bed and pulled the chair before taking a seat.
"How are you feeling?" He gently asked.
"Like absolute shit." I said as I wiped my tears away with a smile. We both laughed.
Suddenly my eye caught something glistening. I looked at my finger and seen there was a ring on it. I examined it and seen that it was the same emerald engagement ring that Mateo had given to me a few years back, but this one was quite different. It had a butterfly on the side of it.
(Mia's ring)
.
.
."I hope you don't mind, but I didn't know when you'd wake up. I got the custom ring done a few days back and thought you'd might like it when you woke up." He said as he spoke softly. I looked at him taking my eyes off the ring on my finger.
"Look I know it's been a few years, but I'd understand if you don't want to wear it." He said looking away.
I quickly leaned over, grabbing his face and kissed him. He melted into the kiss. We leaned in pressing our foreheads together as he cupped my face.
"I've missed you so much Mia Salvatore. You don't understand how crazy I went when you went missing. Even the letter you sent to me, along with the ring. That broke me." He whispered.
I looked at Mateo with tears in my eyes. "I'm so sorry Mateo. I had no choice." I replied. He wiped my stained face with his thumb.
"I know baby. I just really thought I lost you for good. I was about to make the biggest mistake of my life during the years I wasn't with you, but just know that my heart always belonged to you and no one else." He confirmed.
My heart was filled with joy and about ready to burst open. I looked out the window and slowly got up out of with the help of Mateo. I felt confused for a moment.
"Where are we?" I asked. I seen there was a garden with lots of greenery and a beautiful fountain.
"We're home." He said.
I was even more confused than I was before. He smirked.
"We're back in LA, but I had this house built for us. It was in the process of building a few years back when I proposed to you. I thought since we were getting married, we should have our own place." He said.
I was in awe. Speechless to be exact. I didn't know what to say to him. I smiled at him calmly and with warmth.
"It's beautiful. I'd like a tour of it someday." I replied.
I looked outside to admire the beauty of the space and land. There were lots of trees around for privacy.
"Why wait?" Asked Mateo. He slowly began to drop down on one knee.
"Wait- wha—?" I asked frazzled.
I looked over to see my parents filling the room along with Carlos, my uncles and the others. They stood there quietly, smiling and trying not to ruin the moment. Mateo shook his head and looked down chuckling. I looked back at Mateo as he grabbed my hand with the ring on it.
"Mia a few years ago before meeting you, I thought to myself that I didn't know what love was, and that love was for the weak.. but when you came into my life that all changed. You've made me feel things that I've never thought I would feel being a Capo. I was so busy and caught up with this life, that you made me slow down to experience the beauty behind all this chaos. For that, I thank you. I've never loved anyone as much as I love you. For that—"
"—Mia Gabriella Salvatore, will you marry me?" He asked.
My eyes became teary and I looked at everyone who stood across the room. They all smiled. My mother shook her head, smiling with tears in her eyes. I looked back at Mateo and smiled.
"Yes Mateo, I will marry you." I replied.
