MINK
Mink watched Visioner leave the cave, feeling as if her heart had been smashed into a million pieces.
Maybe I shouldn't have said that... She thought. She quickly pushed the doubt away. No. I'm right to accuse Brightness. She's probably the only animus in the mountain, and she had a reason to hurt everyone who had been injured or worse.
Except Jasmin.
Mink frowned. Why would Brightness want to hurt Jasmin? She'd done nothing to the NightWing dragonet.
Or maybe Visioner's right and I was mistaken, A small part of her mind whispered. Mink sighed.
It didn't matter anymore whether she had been right or wrong.
Visioner was no longer her friend.
Maybe I should do as Snowfall said, Mink thought. Leave the chaos behind. Go back to the Ice Kingdom. Visit Crystal and her dragonets.
It sounds much better than staying here.
Mink sunk back into her bed, pulling the white sheets over her head to block out the sound of shouting and frantic running in the healing cave, where the healers were fighting to keep Jasmin's life.
Maybe this school was never really meant for me.
VISIONER
"Are you okay?" Visioner looked up from his talons. Firefly was in front of him, worry and fright filling her eyes.
"Y- yes," He whispered. He pushed away his own thoughts. "Jasmin is your aunt, right?"
"Sort of." Firefly shrugged. "Half-aunt, I guess? She and Deathbringer were half-siblings."
Surprise flashed Visioner's mind. "So Deathbringer is half..."
"SandWing?" Firefly let out a light laugh. "No. It's complicated."
"Okay." They fell into an awkward silence.
Firefly was the one to break it. "She will be fine, right?" She asked.
Visioner wished he could comfort the hybrid dragonet, but he knew better than to lie. "I don't know," He murmured. "But the healers here will try their best."
Firefly gave him a small smile. "I hope they can save her," She said. "I don't want to think about how sad Father will be if she dies."
Visioner stared at her. "Will he? Be sad?" He couldn't imagine Destroyer being anything but angry.
"Of course!" Firefly blinked. "She's his sister."
"You seem to like him very much."
"Of course!" Firefly repeated. "He's my father. Don't you love your father?"
"I...don't know." Visioner rubbed his ruined arm self-consciously. The healed burns on his body suddenly flared up, and he winced.
Firefly didn't ask any questions. "Well, Father's really nice and funny. I love him a lot." She gave him a reassuring smile and trudged away.
Visioner wondered how he would have turned out if he had a father who loved him.
