ECLIPSE

Eclipse knew everything an ocelot needed to survive the wild.

No, not exactly.

There was a dragon who took care of her. She'd been taught how to hunt and survive on her own, in case Jasmin never came back one day, but she relied heavily on her companion.

Eclipse grudgingly admitted to her friends in the rainforest- and herself- that she was a pet. But not a silly sloth like all the other frilly, eyeball-burningly colorful RainWings owned.

She was a hunter. A survivor. An animal with an instinct to survive. An animal who wasn't exactly an ocelot.

And she knew that by disobeying this new, strange NightWing who could somehow speak to her would lead to death.

Eclipse was treading in dangerous waters. The easiest option was to take in this dragonet as her new owner, and kill Jasmin's kind niece, who sometimes fed her toucan.

But she knew that by doing that, she'd disappoint the one dragon who had taken her in when she'd suddenly found herself in the midst of a family of now-dead ocelots. Eclipse would risk her life to protect Jasmin from any pain at all.

After all, what the new dragon had told her couldn't have been real. Jasmin had to still love her. She wasn't dead.

She couldn't, after everything she had gone through.

BRIGHTNESS

Brightness waited in the cave she shared with Firefly.

And waited.

And waited.

Maybe Eclipse killed her, Brightness thought. That would make things easier.

Her ears twitched as she heard something enter the cave. She saw that it was Eclipse.

Did you accomplish my task? Brightness asked. Eclipse shook her head remorsefully. Brightness narrowed her eyes. She took out the goat's leg she had saved from the prey-center.

Dinner, Brightness called. Eclipse hesitantly slunk closer, then stretched her neck to reach the delicious meat.

In an instant, Brightness grabbed the ocelot by the scruff and flung her to the cave wall.

Eclipse yelped as she hit the rock wall. She fell to the ground with a muffled thump, but stood up after a moment on shaky legs.

Stubborn, Brightness snarled. How could you fail such an easy task? I thought Jasmin was an assassin. She's trained you poorly. Even a brainless slug could kill that pitiful dragonet in a heartbeat.

Eclipse bared her teeth, but staggered to the ground just a step away from the NightWing. Brightness leaned in, her mouth inches away from her ear.

One more chance, She murmured. And I'll decide whether you're any use to me.

Eclipse didn't reply.

Brightness tossed the goat leg just a tail-length away from the limp creature.

Impress me next time, She whispered. Or you'll realize how easy it is for me to kill.

She waved her talon, and the magic did its thing as the ocelot's bones crunched back in place.
