Steve immediately radioed Catherine.
"Cath, what's going on?"
"We have a problem. There was just an explosion at the entrance. There are some armed people coming onto the premises and it looks like there are more people than there are guards here."
"Okay, but that also means that the guards have already requested reinforcements here and we don't want to end up in the middle. So get out of there. While all the guards are now dealing with the others, you can definitely use that. Take the way we came in. I'll take Doris and Yao with me and try to get out of here unnoticed. Let's go!"
Unfortunately there was no time for more, although Steve would have liked to say something more to Catherine. He was also still worried about her, because she was supposed to be lying at home and resting instead of running around here. But for now, the top priority was that they all got out of here safely. Only Steve wasn't sure how to do that. But Doris had a suggestion.
"I have a plan."
"You have a plan?"
"Yeah, I didn't come in here unprepared, if that's what you're thinking. I was well prepared. We just have to make it to the north tower."
"Okay, and how is that supposed to help us?"
"On the way in I hid a load of explosives in a switch box. I was actually going to set it off as a diversionary tactic to make the guards all run over there while Yao and I just disappear."
"That's great, but this plan won't work anymore."
"No, but we could blast our way out if we get our hands on this stuff."
"How do you mean that?"
"One floor below the north tower is an old tunnel that was bricked up years ago. It goes all the way to the river and we can probably blow the tunnel open with the explosive device."
"Okay, let's go then."
Steve carefully opened the door and stepped into the corridor. No one seemed to be there, so he gestured for Doris and Yao to follow him. The three of them walked carefully to the north tower and fortunately the way wasn't very far. Doris quickly got the explosive charge out of the control box and then continued to the tunnel with Steve and Yao. They positioned the explosive charge at the walled-in entrance, moved away a little and set off the blast.
It had worked, the way was now free. The three of them immediately ran along the tunnel and Steve now tried to reach the others via radio.
"Catherine, are you outside?"
Silence.
"Cath, talk to me. Are you outside?"
Silence again.
"Danny? Chin?"
There was no reaction from them either. So Steve stopped and looked back. What if they didn't make it and got caught or even...? No, then at least one would have reported quickly and asked for help. So that couldn't be it. Maybe his radio connection was just broken here?
"Kono, Lou, are you there?"
"Yes, but we haven't heard from the others either."
"Okay, listen. This tunnel we are in, ends at the river we drove past earlier. Now withdraw and go there, please."

Now Steve was really worried. He had no idea where the three were or how they were doing. For a moment Steve thought about what to do next. He could now run back and try to find the others, but he would risk being captured or killed doing so. It could also be that the three of them just had no radio reception and would get in touch right away. So Steve walked along the tunnel with Doris and Yao to the end.
When they got to the river, Doris led them down a small path that led in the direction Kono and Lou were. But when they had walked about 100 meters and were now standing in a kind of meadow, a terrible picture presented itself to them.
Catherine, Danny and Chin were kneeling next to each other and behind them were two men with guns in their hands, whereupon Steve also drew his gun and pointed it at one of the men. As the sun was slowly rising, he could see something and Steve almost froze when he recognized the two men.
It were Wo Fat and Victor. The two people who had made Steve's life hell for the last few months and now they had his wife and two of his best friends in their hands. Wo Fat smiled at Steve, seeming to like the desperation and fear in Steve's eyes.
"So Steve, you didn't make it easy for us. And now here we are, facing each other, each having something that the other wants. But we could have saved ourselves all the hassle beforehand. The kidnappings, the torture, the murder allegations, the killer... Unfortunately, somehow you managed to survive and until recently you kept the info on my father's whereabouts a secret. But now my friend Victor and I can finally get what we want. And whether you end up leaving empty-handed is entirely down to whether you cooperate or not."
"I can already imagine what it's about! You want your father, don't you?"
"You see? The thing is very simple. I'll get my dad and you'll get your wife and your friends."
Steve thought for a moment, but didn't really have a choice. He also wasn't sure if Wo Fat and Victor would leave the three unharmed when he gave them Yao, but he just had to try. Steve turned slightly so that he could face Yao and gestured for him to go to Wo Fat. However, Steve kept his gun aimed on Wo Fat. As Yao slowly started to move, Wo Fat and Victor each pushed Danny and Chin forward, who now ran towards Steve. But Catherine was being held back, which of course Steve noticed immediately.
"Hey, let Catherine go or I'll shoot Yao!"
"Take it easy Steve, your wife will be with you as soon as my father is safely with us."
Yao wasn't walking very fast, but when he finally stood next to Wo Fat, Victor roughly pulled Catherine up by the arm and pushed her forward. Catherine ran towards Steve and the others, who were now standing next to each other, when three shots suddenly rang out...
