* * * * *

You knew you were in trouble when you didn't go right to Yuri when it was time to share poems. Of course, you would have if you could have, but Monika had beaten you to it and you'd ended up with Natsuki. All you could do was shoot Yuri an apologetic look before the shorter girl had shoved her poem in your face.

Maybe you'd feel less bad if it was someone else, but of course, it was Natsuki of all people. That wasn't to say that you hated her by any means, but her stark contrasts to Yuri could be quite a whiplash. And you, like most of the club, knew that they didn't always get along.

So it prooooobably wasn't a good start when Natsuki began to actually compliment your poem.

"Woah, Y/N." For once, she didn't look disgusted as she read what you'd written. "This is actually kinda half-decent."

"Uh–?!??! Um, thank you??" you choked out, completely caught off guard. "That's– that's good??!?"

She snorted under her breath at your flabbergasted reaction. "Jeez!! You look so freaked out."

"Well, yeah." You cleared your throat to regain your composure. "You typically don't lean towards my style of writing."

"I know," Natsuki exclaimed, looking as surprised as you were feeling. "I didn't come into this expecting to actually lik– uh, tolerate your poem this time, but... I don't know, it's different from your other poems."

You could just barely see Yuri out of the corner of your eye, though you could make out enough to tell that she was staring right at you and Natsuki. You couldn't see what her expression was, but you suddenly felt guilty for whatever reason.

It wasn't like Natsuki was outright flirting with you or anything, she never had and probably never would, but you still knew how tense things could be between her and Yuri, and to have someone who's typically so hostile being so open to you? Maybe the tsundere was just in a sweeter mood that day, but it was different from her normal behavior and you had no doubt that Yuri had noticed that too.

"I'll, um, I'll take that as a compliment," you said, sweating nervously.

"Good." Natsuki's expression had turned rather triumphant. "Here, read mine and then we can discuss."

You cautiously took the paper and began to scan it quickly, feeling a pair of eyes on the back of your neck. Oh, God, you really hoped Natsuki wouldn't compliment your poem anymore. Yuri didn't get jealous often, but you couldn't help but feel that this was one of the rare situations that would result in that exact outcome.

Oh man. Let's just get this over with.

"I like the message of this," you said when you were done with the poem. "It feels like there's more to it than the initial text, but– uh, it's not glaringly metaphorical or anything. It was easy for me to understand, and it was also really cool. Um, in terms of the way you wrote it. I really like it."

"Thank you." Natsuki grinned in pride. "Glad you recognize the worth in different kinds of writing. Anyway, as for you, your poem didn't suck."

"Gee, thanks," you grumbled, rubbing the back of your neck.

Natsuki fell into a fit of cackles, and you took the opportunity to shoot a glance at Yuri. She was talking with Monika, seemingly in the middle of discussing their poems, but she was clearly sat in a way where she could see you easily. After a second, her violet eyes flickered to meet yours, and you panicked, quickly shifting back to Natsuki.
