I looked at my watch and headed for the senior parking lot. It was windy causing my hair to fly around me like a tornado swallowing my face whole. I looked down at my white shorts and pale rose blouse, was I too dressed up for today? It’s not like it’s a date plus it would be so wrong he was Luke’s friend and I could never do that. If I ever loved him at all I could not get involved with Jess. I mean it just happened last year, is it too soon to even consider having feelings for another guy? I should calm down I bet I’m just reading too much into things, Jess just really missed me and I feel the same. We became distant after Luke’s funeral, which reminds me I haven’t even talked to his family in a while I should probably go see them soon. I reached the edge of the senior parking lot but still didn’t see Jesse. I took one more look at my watch two-fifteen. He should be here soon if not already. I found a bench nearby and waited till I saw a dirty blond head of curls bobbing through the cars heading my way.
“Hey Cecily, sorry I’m late, Patterson can sure give one hell of a lecture!”
“It’s alright; I haven’t been waiting here very long.”
“Well that’s good,” he looked me over with a sparkle in his eyes. I looked away feeling self-conscious under his gaze. “You look beautiful.” I blushed still looking away. What am I doing? Remember were just old friends. I brushed off this butterfly feeling in my stomach, and pushed him.
“Don’t try to flirt with me; it won’t get you out of paying for my coffee!” I said laughing off the sudden urge to hug him.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” His smile was the brightest I had seen in a long time. “Well you ready to go? My cars just two spots over.” I followed him over and gasped, was this really his?
“Since when did you get a 1972 Lamborghini?” I said still in shock.
“Oh it was my uncles he said as long as I kept her going he would let me have her for five thousand. And then I worked my ass off over the summer.”
“Well it’s really nice I love it.”
“Well then maybe I’ll let you drive it one day.” I looked up at him and smiled from ear to ear.
“Really, you would?”
“Of course, why wouldn’t I? Now do you want that coffee or not we’re not going to be young forever you know.”
“Oh yeah, sorry,” I hopped in the passenger seat without a second thought and waited for Jess to start the engine up. It roared louder than any lion I had heard at the zoo sending Goosebumps to my arms and legs. I looked at Jess’s face and I could see the excitement, he loved this car. He rolled down the windows and turned on the radio. The first song that came on was Paramore and I absolutely loved them, I turned up the music automatically, stretching out my hands, closing my eyes and singing along with them. This was a breath of fresh air and I couldn’t feel anymore alive.
“You know I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so relaxed,” said Jess looking from the corner of his eyes at me. He was trying to keep from laughing I could tell.
“Well why don’t you keep on watching the road buddy instead of worrying about me?” I said laughing off his serious observation. The coffee shop was about fifteen minutes away from the school and it wasn’t long until we were parked in their parking lot.
“Alright I’m ready for that coffee, let’s go!” I said opening my door and dragging Jess out of his seat. He just laughed and followed me in; there was no line thankfully so we casually walked up to the counter.
