Chapter Twenty-Two

Summer break

Lando POV

"She said what?" Max says, coming into view over the phone.

"I didn't know you was with Daniel,"

"What did she say,"

"She asked if I wanted to meet her mum,"

"Are you sure that's what she said?"

"Positive," there was a look on his face.

"What," he looks at the screen

"Nothing," I frown.

"Max, what's up,"

"Katherine has never let anyone meet her mum," he says. "She's never brought a boy to her. I think I'm probably the only person apart for Harper that's met her,"

"I mean, I've never introduced a girl to my parents before either," he shakes his head.

"This is different, Lando,"

"Different how? Because she has a rocky relationship with her dad?'

"You'll find out why it's different, but just know that this is something that means a lot to her she must really love you to do this," I nod.

"Okay, I understand," I didn't fully understand what was so different from her meeting my family.

She walks in. "Are you ready?" I nod

She drove us about an hour and a half away from my London apartment.

"Lando, I just wanted to say before we get there that I don't let just anybody meet my mum, and it's hard for me," I place my hand in her thigh "I don't talk about my mum to rarely anyone and we all know my dad doesn't but its for a reason,"

"It's okay, it'll be okay," she takes a deep breath and nods as we pull up to a building.

"Guess it's now or never," I follow her into the building.

"Hi, I'm here to see Marie Button," the lady nods, signing us in, and Kat takes my hand.

"She never had the chance to change her last name," I watch her knock on the door and open it. A woman's spitting image of Katherine sat in a chair near the window.

"Mum," the woman looks up. Kat lets go of my hand, walking closer to her.

"Katie cat is that really you," she says, touching her face. "God, look at how grown up you look,"

"You saw me not long ago,"

"Did I?" Kat nods. Marie turns her head to me.

"Do i know this man?"

"No mum, this is Lando," I walk closer. "My boyfriend," Marie smiles as I bend down next to her.

"You finally got rid of that Theo. I hope you're treating her right,"

"I'm trying to," I let out. She touched my face.

"Very handsome," I smile at her.

"Mum, have you taken your meds today?" Kat says, holding a pill cup.

"Yes,"

"Are you sure?"

"I don't know, actually. I might have forgotten to,"

"It's okay, let's take them now," I was starting to realise why it was so different.

Katherine comes over to me as Marie takes her tablets.

"She got diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimers a couple of years ago, but it took to her quicker than they expected her health deteriorated from then," I squeeze her hand."she remembers people quite well, but that's pretty much it she won't be able to remember the conversation or anything,"

"She's seems lovely," she nods, resting her head on my shoulder. "I'm glad you let me meet her,"

"I'm glad I did too she means the world to me, and so do you,' I let go of her hand and walk over to Marie.

"Lando," she smiles. "Look after her,"

"Always,"

"Promise that you'll always be by her side," I look at Kat she had tears in her eyes.

"I promise I'll never leave her,"

"Does your dad ever visit her?"

"I don't know they got divorced before she got put into the home,"

"He knows she's there?"

"Yeah, I couldn't say if he ever saw her,"

"How often do you go?"

"Every time I'm in England," she says, "it helps that Red Bull headquarters isn't far away. I try my best to see her as often as I can,"

"Can I come,"

"You'd do that?"

"Of course I'd like to go with you,"

"Then you can come,"

"I think she liked me,"

"She did. She'd tell you if she didn't," I laugh.

"I'm glad she liked me then,"

"I met her,' I say to max when he picks up.

"You did?"

"I did,'

"How'd it go? Please tell me it went well."

"I think it went well, yeah,"

"Oh, thank god," he lets out a breath. "Katherine is very protective over her mother. She told Theo about the Alzheimers and he made it out like it was the worst thing ever and why would she wanted him to meet her. I'd she wouldn't remember it,"

"But she remembers names and faces,"

"Katherine tried to tell him that, but he'd shut her down each time and repeat what he said,"

"What a fucking dick,"

"Marie knew of theo they were together before she got put into that home but he never wanted to meet her."

"I'm glad I punched him,"

"Katherine goes as often as she can I think she's scared that soon she'll start forgetting people,"

"I said I'd give with her "

"Thank you"

"For what"

"For understanding and for loving Katherine the way you do,"

"Max I know it's early days but I think I've found the one,"

"I hope you have,"

"She means the world to me" I look in the window and at her "and Marie is her world so she's also mine"
