I pause in my tracks and turn to face who could be yelling so loud through the throng of people. It's just then that my brain processes the screech of car tires coming to a halt. I'm in a state of paralysis as I stand smack the middle of the road, head on with a sleek black car.

The thud of my heart echoing in my ears is almost enough to drown out the loud cries of the individual on the pavement, clearly desperate to get my attention. However, my mind is unable to focus on anything else other than the vehicle in front of me.

A vehicle that bears a striking resemblance to—no.

It can't be.

As my frantic eyes fixate on the car waiting for the inhabitant emerge from the driver's seat, my heart fills with dread. What if it's him?

My apprehensions are cut short as that same voice fills my eardrums once more.

"Miss! Miss!"

Suddenly I'm being pulled from the road by a pair of hands coiled around my forearm. I cannot will myself to detach my head from the direction of the pitch black sedan as the unknown individual pulls me to safety.

I hear their voice again. "Are you okay?"

That's when I catch the window of the car begin to descend in a slow, deliberate motion. I watch in suspense, ready to see his face, his beautiful face with a cruel, malice grin as he stares into my soul.

But what I see isn't Tom. I furrow my brows, a confused noise escaping from the back of my throat. I can't help the slight feeling of relief that floods through my system, despite the petrifying near death experience.

The man in the car is bald with a thick pair of sunglasses perched on the bridge of his nose. His cold stare penetrates my orbs as I gradually move closer to the pavement. His stare is unforgiving, along with the solemn expression he possesses.

I squint my eyes and look closer at him. More specifically at the mark of some sort on the side of his neck.

A tattoo.

I squeeze my eyes shut as the world begins to spin. The tattoo flashes in my mind and I stumble backwards.

It flashes again, like small fragments of memories coming back to me, and I see it. I see it as clear as day. Carved into the flesh of my parents like some kind of sick markinga detail I don't even remember noticing at the time, it now overwhelms me and--

Someone is shaking me out of my trance. "Hello? Can you hear me?"

I look up and catch the end of the black car screeching off down the street.

What the fuck just happened?

"Um.. yeah, I.." I manage to get out as I look up at the stranger who pulled me off the road. I stare into his concern filled green eyes and it all hits me like a hammer.

I almost died. That car could've hit me.

My breathing becomes erratic at the thought.

"It's okay, you're okay." He reassures me. "Just breathe."

I do just that, and eventually I come back to my senses. The world around me continues to move again, the civilians of New York resuming their daily activities as they frantically walk through the city streets.

"Thank you so much.. I don't know what came over me, I--" I start to say, but the unknown individual raises his hand calmly at me. His fawn coloured hair blows slightly from the wind.

"You don't need to explain yourself." He tells me. "Let's just be lucky you're alive right now. I could've sworn that dude was about to hit you. But then he just, stopped." He half chuckles and gasps in a sense of bewilderment. As if he is just as shocked at this situation as I am.
